I don't know about you, but as a guy who has shot guns since I was a kid I am get angry at the lazy attitude that some people have towards carrying and shooting guns. I was taught by a very disciplined father and so maybe I have a sharper view of this subject than is needed, but i believe every gun owner owes it to themselves, their family and society in general to practice gun safety ALL the time, to teach gun safety to EVERYONE and to be aware of how they present themselves to the public ALL the time, EVERYWHERE they go.
Some pet peaves I have:
1. NOT treating every gun as if it is loaded. I see people at the range, in their homes, at gun shows pointing guns towards other people, waving them around as they talk etc. Unless the chamber is open and unloaded you should never point a weapon any where other than at the ground or at a properly back-stopped target.
2. Bragging about guns and their exploits with guns in public - now this one can be interpreted wrong, but what I mean is, if you are at a restaurant, bar, shopping mall, work etc and strangers or non-gun owners are walking by you, you shouldn't be bragging about how you were unloading full clips from your AR at deer or anything else that could construed as unsafe by the un-initiated. Those people may vote against your gun and hunting rights in the near future.
3. Deer hunters who act as if they are entitled to shoot as many deer as possible, on anyone's land whether they have permission or not.
4. Hunters who shoot at anything that moves. If you don't know 100% that you are shooting at a real deer, you've got no business pulling the trigger.
5. Hunters that go into town with a) a deer hanging off the tailgate for all to see b) go into a store/restaurant with blood on their clothes c) go into a store bragging about the five deer they shot this morning. Many people do not understand the difference between good, safe respectable hunters and the un-safe ones if they are around town bragging about it openly.
Even though it is our constitutional RKBA, we have to constantly show the rest of the population that we are law abiding citizens who can be trusted to use guns safely and respectably. The minute we stop showing them that we are a good group of people, there are a ton of liberals ready to take the RKBA away from us. Public opinion is the key to all of it.
Anyone else have pet peaves they could pass along to us?
