Gun Owners Against Mini-14 Brass Shirt???

I got hit in the eye from a Mini 30 that my buddy was shooting. Luck for me it happened just as my eye was in the process of blinking. Otherwise I would have really been hurting. I did bruise the hell out of my eyelid.

I don't have a Mini-14, but I do have an M1A. She's a flinger, allright. Anywhere from 1 o'clock to about 3:30.

I try to be courteous to folks at the range, but it isn't always possible on those really crowded days. I may build a pvc-framed net (I don't like brass catchers mounted directly on guns).

Hopefully the experience taught you to wear eye protection!

Counting on luck when firearms or any dangerous machinery is involved is a bad idea. I was lucky in that I saw my dad trust in luck a few times when I was a kid, so I learned the lesson without getting too badly hurt myself. He's missing half a finger.

All I can say is I hope none of you ever have the chance to have a piece of brass from the guy next to you at the range go down the collar of your shirt like happened to me. Hit me in the back of the head and right down the back of my shirt. Impact was no problem but damn did it burn. Shirt was tucked in at the time too so it didn't just fall out.

That's what you get for not wearing a tie to the range. Kids these days. Such slobs.:p

Yes, Mini's do toss the brass far and hard. It can be fixed with a reduced diameter gas port bushing and a Wolff extra power recoil spring. Instead of throwing brass 30 feet, it lays it much closer to you. Wow, 17 dollars for that gay shirt, they must be smoking rocks. :D

My Mini (a Mini-14, not Ranch Rifle, no scope mount) throws the brass forward and to the right pretty consistently. Of course it throws it quite a distance but unless someone was standing in front of the firing line they wouldn't get hit with it. Now my Garand... that's another issue, it spits it much more to the direct right...

This is the way I was talking about with my Mini-14 which is the standard type, not Ranch. Mine's pretty consistant too. My Garand seems to throw the first couple of rounds to 1o'clock and move back to 3o'clock as the op-rod spring's tension changes. Clip usually ejects to 3o'clock of it don't land on my Stetson and set there.:D

Brass from a .223 AK goes forward and right at a 30-45 degree angle to the muzzle at really high velocity. Without a Valmet buffer it does more than dent the brass, it nearly cuts it in half. With an AKM dust cover it's a little easier on the brass but it still spits it HARD.

This is really only an issue when using the rifle in tight quarters... say around IDPA barriers. Richocheting brass becomes yet another obstacle.

Be sure to WARN your safety officer and wear your eyes and ears.

The Mini 14 I've used the most is a not a ranch model... brass lands close by and isn't too dinged up.

I used to have a mini, I had forgotten about its vigorous brass ejection. It was a ranch model.
Every time we went to the range, whoever was shooting the mini went on the FAR right of everyone else.

Funny thing is though, I have a Baby Eagle 45 now, and it throws brass even further than my mini did.

Holy crap. I think you'd better learn some serious Matrix Moves before you shoot that thing at a range with dividers. Or, y'know, you could join the Wild West Show and do trick shots with it. Hit one target a'front of ya', and hit another one two hundred yards away on your right with the brass!

Hey! Maybe that's why gangbangers hold their pistols sideways! The brass, ejected with sufficient force, is a form of Urban Artillery!

I win.

I have a mini 14 ranch and a mini 14 and my ranch will send the brass 50 feet but when I shoot in the wind it can fly even farther. But the one I have that is worse is a walter P1 it is not that it goes so far but it is a good thing I always wear sun glasses or it would have hit me in the eye many times. I have been using a large bath towel on a stand to stop the brass. It does not bounce off when it hits it and it does not dent it either. Once it hits it just drops into my bucket. You do have to have it close thought or some of the brass will miss but this does work awesome. JPShadow

I was once at a range in which the parking was right behind the firing line. I had probably 10 or 15 rounds before I realized I was bouncing my brass off my car 20 or 25 feet away (behind me and well to the right). Eek.

If there were others on the range, I'd always take the far right position, for obvious reasons.

I have an older Mini that puts fired brass in a reasonable area
simular to a Garand. With HK or my SKSs, it's pretty much luck
to find fired brass. HK probably being the worst!

Some people sure complain alot. Dont your ranges have the little walls the separate shooting areas? My 181 series mini only throws it about 15 feet.

I have a couple of Mini's with scopes on them and find a Baseball typs hat with the adjustable strap on the back makes a good brass catcher. Just hang it over the ejection port, by putting it over the scope, and most of the brass will stay in the hat or fall right at your feet. Works well and is cheap and easy to use.

Right. Most semiautos spit their brass three or four stations to the right. I was pelted with 9mm recently when I was (self righteous moment coming here) shooting my nice, civilized, self contained REVOLVER :neener:. I got my revenge by picking up every piece of brass that came into my area.

I'm always embarrassed by the way my AR spits brass; if I could think of a way to put a brass catcher on it I would, but it'd have to be the size of the net behind home plate....

I had a AG42b Swede. The first time I shot that gun I thought that it vaporized the brass. I looked high and low but couldn't find it anywhere. After hiking downrange to check targets I started finding brass. Never once did I shoot that gun and find all of the brass. Wasn't a big deal tho' 'cuz it mangled the brass beyond any further use.

I'm glad to hear that my mini 14 is constant. It not only throws the brass all over the place, but the bullets as well. Good going Bill. For just a few dollars more (if that) he could have put a heavier barrel which would go a long way in the accuracy dept. So much for those bean counters.

My CZ-52 pistol really wings the brass out hard at about 4 o'clock. I discovered this when I was shooting outside in a field and kept seeing dust puffs in my peripheral vision. They must have been over 25 feet away. Consistent, though...

Pistol range, guy next to me has a Mak. Swear it ejected straight sideways into my head every round. Unfortunately they were shooting steel case so no scrounging, even.
My P220 ejects straight uo and slightly 3 o'clock. I can set a bucket there and catch most of it.

Had this guy with a CETME on rifle range who loiked to misbehave si I turned the gas on my FAL to max and rained on him back.

Not for long, I wouldn't. Nor would I let my wife be hit with flying brass. If it's so crowded I can't move, you need to shoot something else. You're not one of those wimpy one gun owners, are you?
