I have been thinking about having a few guns either hard chromed, electroless nickeled or re-blued. I have looked at different companies and I am torn between Brileys because it's 30 minutes away or robar because of their NP3 coating.

If you have sent your gun(s) off before did you run into any added extra costs? Like for instance instead of $285 as the website work sheet says; it turned out to be $475 because of the gun was dirty when you sent it.

These are numbers I just came up. Basically I am wondering if there are any hidden costs to look out for. I don't want to have X amount of dollars set aside and then have to come up with any extra money.

If any one has used Robar could you give me your experience and cost to have the gun re finished.

Thanks for any help you can give.

The places I have seen usually will list whatever additional costs that may apply. Some of them will include in the price minor touchup of marks or scratches but charge more if it needs more prep. Guns that are getting blued often have a higher prep cost depending on the lustre that you desire and the amount of polishing that it will take. Mark

There may be additional costs depending on the type of gun being refinished. Some places may charge a premium to work on complex firearms or rather expensive ones ie. Beretta EELL ($20k shotgun). What type of gun are you looking at getting refinished?

I am looking to get my norinco 1911 refinished and maybe my CZ52 done as well. I do not like the parked job on it

Our shop charges about $300 to ceramic coat an entire gun, inside and out. As far as bluing goes, there is usually a metal preparation charge and a bluing charge.

I would suggest calling Robar and asking them; I have had several guns done with both NP3 and Roguard, planning to do so again; no hidden charges/surprises, always very pleased with how things turned out. They will not talk down to you, but have always been entirely professional with me.
If I had anything to do over again, I would pay for metal prep; like most gunsmiths, they are somewhat wary of doing anything other than exactly what you tell them to. So if the metal finish on the gun was nicer from the factory (like a Colt Commander I had done) then it comes out better than say the Para I had done, which could have been better from the factory; Not Robars' fault or neglect, I simply didn't ask for it so they didn't do it. My bad. I'll ask them to do the prep work next time.
Cheers, TF

I just had a beat-up, rusted, and pitted Walther PPK/S (it was poorly stored, as they say, when I bought it) refinished with molly-resin at Mac's Restorations in Tucson. He did a great job, took the gun down to its parts, put it all back together after applying the finish, and shipped it back to me. The price was $160.
