If you are having a problem of storing long guns you might want to consider this product.

http://storemoreguns.com/

It is basicly plastic rods that are inserted into the barrel of a long gun and have a small disc with velcro on one end and a sheet of velcro material to affix to the inside top surface of the safe that the plastic rods will stick to.

Although somewhat overpriced for the materials cost it has one outstanding feature.

It works great :D

It also stops the guns from falling over when getting other long guns out.

And yes you DIYs you probable can make something similar.

I have no financial or any other kind of interest in the company.

I have found that it is often times easier to fit more bolt guns in it you open the bolt and let it rest downward. It allows another gun to be put just a little closer to one another.

I modified the interior of my gun safe myself. I removed the shelves and removed the carpeting from one shelf re cut notches and then re-glued the carpet back in place to allow more long guns. It was a job but it is possible. The hardest part was the determination to tear it apart and redo. All the shelves are is chipboard, carpet glue and carpet. All it takes is bravado to tackle it.

Capacity is what you make it. I watched a friend of mine pull about 40 guns out of a safe designed for 26-28. He had all of his guns in soft cases, packed some up, some down, like sardines, and as he pulled them out to show me his new acquisitions, he knew right where they were amongst the others. His handguns were the same way. You don't HAVE to use the notches.........I'll bet he had 60-70 guns in there, including the pistols, which were in there the same way, on the top shelf. It was laughable...like he had a storage room behind the safe......

This is the Champion M22. Its advertised capacity is 24 guns. I thought that meant long guns. You couldn't get 24 in there if you melted them down and poured them in.

Two caveats: Like all capacity quotes, it only works if you are storing thin guns, like Martini single shots or lever actions. If you store bolt actions or scoped guns, (or worse, scoped bolt actions :) ) they take more room.

Secondly, the 24 gun quote for that safe is undoubtedly intended without the shelf installed.

If you think the one you are considering is big enough...

Get the next bigger size.

Gun safes are like camping tents. You can usually get the number of guns in there but they will be like sardines. A tent that sleeps 4people, will sleep 4 averaged sized adults but they will be shoulder to shoulder. Now if its 4 400lb guys, good luck.

My 11-87 has a 30" barrel and i have to break it down in order to keep it in the safe. It sucks because the parts take up another spot for a future gun. And i hate having to take 3 guns out to get to the one i want.
