Gun safe full; need ideas for pistol rack

I just made a rack that holds 11 handguns, I cut 2 1â€x4†boards about 20†long and put 11 evenly spaced notches on top of the long edge then I screwed a 1â€x5†board about 6†long at each end (like a box with no bottom or top). It took about an hour and works great, I also keep handguns on the door using spool pegs.

Gixerman1000 - can you give us any details on the spool peg mountin and the handguns you have on the door?

I really like the shelf setups, but my new mosin 91/30 means that I have to remove the shelf in the safe so I am looking at door mounting setups.

They are some type of spool, I bought them years ago from a Ben Franklin’s arts and crafts store (Wife’s idea, honest), if I remember right, they came in a little plastic bag with 12 or so per bag and they didn’t cost much.

I used washers behind some to space them out as needed with certain pistols and on a few I cut the lip of the spool off in some places to clear the front of the trigger guard, each pistol has to be lifted up from the muzzle then pulled out.
Some of the guns have been on the door for 7 years and I have yet to have any problems with wear on the pistols or have any (I don’t even want to say it) fall off, they fit very solid.

As far as your shelf, the shelf in my safe has an opening on the left side for very long rifles to go through it, you might be able to cut a small space out of your shelf for the barrel to come up through and save most of the shelf.

Sapper,

One thing to think about is the replacement value of your mosin. I have an Enfield and a Mauser that are very long and were keeping me from being able to move the shelf down. I figured I'd rather keep 6-8 more handguns safe then a couple milsurps. So, I leave the bolts in the safe so they can't be fired if stolen, and leave the rifles out of the safe.

Just an idea.

Good ideas on cutting the shelf, and with keeping bolts in the safe, rifles out. Currently the mosin is angled inside the safe, so everything is still secure :) . The problem is that doing it like that takes up a lot of room :( . The spool idea looks like it will work, I just need to convince myself that drilling into my safe door is a good idea :) .

Any ideas for non drilling a pegboard for handguns? Perhaps, one of those over the door shoe bags could be installed. I might have to look into that.
