I have a weird question for you fellow Arizonians. I'm moving and I may need to store my gun safe in the garage. My question is how guns do in a safe in the heat of a garage in the middle of summer in Arizona? Is there harm in this?

Thanks!

No harm to the guns but ammo may be a different story, or so i have read.

I haven't seen any noticeable affect on AZ summer heat and ammo.

My garage gets up to around 140 degrees (estimated) in the middle of the summer during the day. I will put a thermometer in there and see for sure this year.

Even with 2 vents on top I swear its an oven in there.

It should be no problem. However, you will need asbestos gloves, face shield and flame retardent suit to retreive any firearms during the summer. I think metals and polymer stuff would be okay but I wouldn't risk an extra fancy custom wood stock. I'm guessing there might be some warpage. It really is amazingly ridiculously hot there in the summer.

seconding the concern for quality woods in such heat.
You should be able to find a reasonably affordable digital thermometer, either a home indoor / outdoor type with a radio-equipped outdoor thermo you could place in the safe, or a computer-server-room type that tracks / keeps tab on max high and low temps, to find out how bad it might be getting in there.

The guns will probably survive ok, but the ammo will be affected. The explosive components don't like temperature extremes, and Phoenix in the summer is pretty extreme. Keep everything cool if possible.
Also, putting the safe in the garage is an invitation to stealing the whole thing with a hand truck. Think about that, too.

So it should be OK but if at all possible, best to be avoided?

No it is a good idea. There are many factors that go into weather a safe could be stolen or not, and there are methods on how to prevent it from walking away.

?
Who goes to the trouble and expense of a large safe and doesn't bolt it to the floor?

Been there, done that, no problem. I also store all of my ammo and reloading supplies in the garage. I've noted slightly higher velocities with some calibers in the summer than during the winter, but I do all my load development during the summer so it's not an issue.

The batch of .45, .38, and .30-06 ammo that I'm using right now has been in my garage for 5 years PLUS survived a house fire. I don't worry about it any more.
