I know that a soft case is considered a way to cause rust on firearms. Is this going to be true even in a 3 day period? I have an interstate move coming up and there will be 72 hours from leaving old home to getting to new home, during which I will have everything locked in a safe, in a locked pickup truck bed, parked in a safe location nowhere near a city street.

Will the soft cases cause rust this quickly or is that a long term storage problem? I will rub RIG over everything external, anything special about internals/bores beyond my normal storage of a light oil layer?

My dad stored the three long guns he owned in the attic in cases. They were lightly oiled, and never had any rust on them.

They will be fine

Just rub them down with an oily rag and you are set. No problem.

I've kept a shotgun in the truck since February, stored in nothing but a silicone gun sock, haven't seen a spot of rust on it. Its been through subfreezing dry temps to hot and humid, like today.

I check it once a week, lightly oil it if needed, cycle the action, and slip it back in the sock and back into the truck.

I leave my Glock 19 in my locked car safe for 6 months at a time in the hot florida heat and humidity and she always goes bang at the range.

I left a Mosin in the trunk of my car in a soft case after being sprayed with Eezox for a year and a half before deciding i didn't like the idea of a "trunk gun."

Not a spot of rust. That's here in CT where our weather goes from negative numbers in winter to 100F in the summer with high humidity.

It's not the case, it's the moisture that the case can hold in when conditions to produce condensation are right.

But a car is like a greenhouse. It'll seldom be cooler than the outside so it'll seldom produce high humidity levels. And on those rainy days when it is humid the humidity is soon driven out by a return to the "greenhouse" conditions.

So all in all don't worry about it.

Case by case basis.....

Get it? :D
As noted, if you coat the firearm with a light amount of a well made CLP; Frog-Lube, Ballistol, Weaponshield, Rand CLP, etc or use a good bag/case like Bore-Store, you should be okay. ;)

Id advise against the 5.11 Tactical DE pistol case. This is the "advanced" pistol case by 5.11  .
I bought a new one for my Glock 21 .45acp generation 04 & plan to return it to www.policehq.com . I have a black 5.11 PuSH bag which works well but this pistol case is sub-standard.
5.11 Tactical states it contains a "magnet" to hold the weapon or small parts on the gun range. This feature is only about 0.5" long.
The nylon material neither protects the firearm surface from scuffs/damage or holds it securely in place.
The designers only added one/01 handle too.
This makes the case easy to drop(when loaded) & awkward to carry. Seriously, didn't 5.11 Tactical T&E this case?
God forbid, you'd need to snatch your handgun quickly in a serious critical incident only to open the case & find it all twisted around. :uhoh:

On a school grade system Id give the 5.11 Tactical DE pistol case a: D-. Plus the case itself is small so anything with a 5"/6"/7" barrel or a few magazines won't fit. :banghead:
