Amen! Pics are paramount. Some folks idea of 97%, or great condition, etc will vary 100% from yours. (And some folks just plain fib) If the pics don't show it, it isn't so.
I've actually had bad pictures work in my favor a time or two. It keeps the price down sometimes. Bought a Sig P220 that looked a little rough in the pictures but for $400 I figured it'd make a good beater, turned out to be pretty nice in real life.

Never had a problem on GB, but I always give the nod to a GB brick-and-mortar FFL whenever possible, especially when they've had tons of positive feedback.

dilli, if you still have a copy of the auction and the messages between you and the seller, I would contact the USPS and then the FBI/ATF. They may not follow up, but this seems like a slam dunk case of mail fraud. Stories like yours are also a good reason to use credit cards, because you could have gotten your cc to issue a charge back against the dealer and gotten your money back.

I contacted USPS and the ATF. USPS wasn't interested in frauds under $100,000. They took the paperwork and fees to do the research for the money order used and then I never heard from them again. Just try to hunt someone down and see how hard it is to talk to a living human being. The ATF wasn't interested at all.

Frankly, I got much further with the local police department. I worked with them and then the DA and helped to get the guy put in jail. I had copies of his drivers license, multiple email addresses he did business under, multiple cell phone numbers, and even got his accounts closed at Gunbroker.com, GunAuction.com, and GunsAmerica.com. I even was able to track down a few people that had "won" auctions and contact them before they sent their money out.

I hounded that guy for about a year shutting everything down of his that I could find.

I've bought several guns off GB and haven't had a problem yet. I ask questions, look at pics and screen as best as possible the sellers feed back. I don't think there is a fool proof way to guarantee your purchase but definately reduce your odds of getting the shaft.
Btw most of my purchases were with a USPS money order.

How many of you using USPS money orders have actually looked into how much protection it provides you?

A USPS money order offers no more protection than any other form of payment. There are some who think because its sold by USPS it will have magical powers.

Mail a WalMart or 7 Eleven money order and you get exactly the same "protection" you do with a USPS money order.

Second that. One of the urban legends. Many of the same people who tack "don't trust the gubment" creed onto their listings, insist on US Postal Money Orders.

Well, if you take a USPS money order to the post office to cash, they can tell you right away if it's real or phoney. Bank checks can bounce around for weeks and/or months if the writer is a fraud. I don't know how Walmart or 7-11 money orders work, though.

Perhaps so Larry if you must cash it. If you deposit a MO in your bank, it will show credit next business day. (A bank account is required to deal on GB) Correct me if I am wrong.

YZ Perhaps so Larry if you must cash it. If you deposit a MO in your bank, it will show credit next business day....
And this is how people get scammed.

My long lost third cousin (he's a Prince btw) bought a $25 widget from me on Ebay....................and sent me a $1000 check to pay for it. He's so rich he doesn't use anything less than $1,000 checks. He said since the widget was such a good deal I could keep an extra $100, but to send him the balance of that check in cash with the widget. They don't have ATM's in West Africa i guess.

How many people do you think fall for that every day?......................Enough to keep the scammers trying it.

Just because your bank credits your account, doesn't mean your deposit was "good". Counterfeit checks and money orders may take a week or more to bounce back.............and then your bank will deduct that amount from your balance.

While "cashing" your USPS money order at the post office will tell you if its genuine..................good luck finding a post office clerk with more than $600 in their drawer.

Certified checks can be verified as to the amount by calling the bank that issued it. A certified check is as good as cash.

Remember, the most commonly faked money orders are USPS money orders........they take a real USPS money order and wash the original amount and restamp it. The "security features" don't change, just the amount.

A valid CC, in turn, requires a bank account.
So: anyone dealing on GB has a bank account into which a legit MO can be safely deposited. Let's forget the trivia for a moment. In real life, yes or no?

Are you saying a cashier's check is better than a MO Tom?

Reading a few of these posts makes me glad that I seldom even look at GB any more.

When GB first started, it was a neat idea. I bought a few things, including at least one Remington 700, and was very satisfied with all transactions.

As with so many things on the 'net, though, as time passes, more dirtbags arrive, and soon screw it up for everyone.

I was not aware of the issues with GB feedback, but GB seems to use the eBay model, and they long ago lost all credibility WRT feedback.

About being able to make a deposit in your bank. If you are on GB you have a bank account. Any GB member does. GB may or may not have the info, that's not the point.

Example. You receive a MO. You don't have to take it to PO. You have an option to deposit it in your bank which knows more about counterfeit screening than I do.

Yes, if you mean it like that.
But, your original statement made it sound like GB requires you to provide them with your bank account info to deal on there.

I have taken MOs and checks for stuff I sell on GB. I tell the buyer that the gun won't go until the check clears. I've never had a problem.

When I buy something, if possible, I use a card, just in case of problems. Never had one yet, with payment, or the guns.
