gunner vacations?

Hi all, I'm just back from AZ which I would recommend to anyone BTW, and want to share one anecdote. We were in Phoenix getting ready to return and my wife said "I saw an ad yesterday where you could go to a gun club and rent guns."

That's no biggie I thought. Nothing I couldn't do at home.

"Including fully automatic ones."

"oh" I say.

We didn't have enough time to go to the place so we didn't go.

My question is; What would be a good gun nut vacation? All I can think of is a training site like Thunder ranch or Gunsite. Are there any good firearms museums or something like that? Historical sites? Sporting clays resorts?

We are planning to go to Tenn around Labor day to sight see. Is there any thing I could see or do there? I really would have liked to do the full auto thing and could have if we had found it earlier.

some places in Las Vegas allow full auto rentals. American Shooters requires you obtain some sort of membership. their weapons, last i saw them a few months ago, were not in tip-top shape. about 1/2 of them were broken or out of service. The Gun Store on Tropicana has alot of rules (due to the amount of tourists). they walk you into the range and inside the range they load it and hand it to you and stand there while you shoot. when you're empty they take it from you and escort you off the range.

i suppose with as many people they rent to you'd have to do this. but i wouldn't call that a 'vacation.'
 
Camp Perry.

There are competitions pretty much all summer, but I can vouch for the CMP Service Rifle matches - M16 EIC Match Aug. 4, Springfield August 5, Garand and NTIT August 6. You need to know what you are doing (or at least pay attention) with shooting and pit duty, but these matches are designed to introduce shooters to competitive shooting.

Besides the matches there is vendor's row (which has everything you need for your Garand, M1A, AR15 or Springfield), award ceremonies and the CMP Store where you can pick out your own Garand, 1903, 1903A3 or M1917 Eddystone if you have proof of citizenship, belong to a CMP club and have proof that you have shot in a competitive rifle match.

There are also hotels on the beach in the nearby town of Port Clinton.

Oh yeah -- and I hear that nearby "Cleveland Rocks". I've only driven through, but it does have the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, amusement parks nearby and a Dave and Busters with good food and shooting video games.
 
I took a gun related vacation last year, sort of. A friend (also a member of this site) and I drove out to the CMP North Store to buy rifles. It was a lot of driving, but a fun way to spend the day. We still talk about how we got lost trying to navigate through Toledo Ohio.
 
I would think a trip to Knob Creek would qualify, but it would also be the most expensive vacation EVER!!!

My fiancee suggested a week at Gunsite for our honeymoon. I couldn't tell if she was joking or not so I suggested Jamacia instead. Not sure if I'm an idiot or not :p

(certainly not an idiot for marrying a woman who watches Shooting Gallery weekly, has been pestering me to get her a HK Tactical for IDPA, and can handle a 500 S&W that weighs almost as much as she does, but I might be for not taking her up on the Gunsite offer!)
 
The NRA Whittington Center in Raton, NM has a lot of events and matches during the year.

I set out to go there on a family vacation several years ago, but ran out of steam in South Dakota. One of these days I'll get there.
 
DO NOT miss the museum in Cody Wyoming! It contains a 'triple threat':

1. Western memoribelia including Buffalo Bill Cody stuff
2. American Indian art and artifacts
3. The Winchester Arms museum-EVERY type Win ever made including some of the most beautiful pieces of engraved art on firearms you can imagine AND Win's used by Teddy Roosevelt,etc.
