In the new series 1923. The very first scene in Africa, he kills a charging lion. I guess this series is too new and I can't find any info on IFDB. Does anyone know what type of gun and caliber is used to kill the lion? It's some kind of double barrel rifle.

I don't know about the double, but I spotted more than a few Rifle No4s at the train station. That rifle had not even left the drawing board in 1923. However, there were a few No1 MkIIIs running around, which are far more accurate for a local force of a British colony at that time.

Also, Hollywood knows knows nothing about guns and hardly ever gets it right...

I haven’t seen the show. With TV/movie production it wouldn’t shock me if it turns out to be a hammer .410 SxS with sights brazed on the barrels by the prop masters to look like an expensive rifle. I can see someone doing this because the guns are cheaper and it’s easier to make blanks out of brass .410 than out of a real African safari rifle cartridges. Most folks wouldn’t even think about the gun, its a rare bird that would really wonder what it is as its flashed on the screen. (Like us ;).)

Don’t be surprised if at some point in the series someone will ask for the double gun and say what caliber it is. “I see the lion pride on the rise, get me the .470.” or something like that.

Stay safe.

I'll have to take a picture of the gun and the cartridges it shows in his belt. Looking at the cartridges, my guess is it's supposed to be one of the nitro rounds. Which is funny because in episode two he fires it one handed. But I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually just a doctored up 410.

Looks like a bona fide double express rifle.
Barrel spacing, I think with the little protective bar, quarter rib with V sight, sling swivel on barrels, all look proper to me.
Box lock action as correct for a second quality rifle.

It is hard to estimate calibre from a picture, but it is not a monster magnum, maybe a .400 or .450.

I like his period styled square watch, too.

...in episode two he fires it one handed.

Hey, even a .450 NE blank doesn't kick much. It's a MOVIE, you know.

I'm glad someone was able to identify it and satisfy my curiosity. I looked up some specs of a 450 NE. It'll push a 450+ grain bullet at almost 2200 ft/sec. The wealth of knowledge here never ceases to impress. Thanks Jim

Sheridan does it better than most. The firearms may not be perfect but they definitely give the show a more authentic feel than most producers seem to care about. I'm enjoying that double rifle and his handgun is a 1911. Presumably a WW1 take back. Harrison Ford's character is carrying a double action Smith or Colt and I've seen a few 1894s so far.

I'm hooked so far.

Might be a .458 SxS, but no guess about brand. The .458 has been popular in Africa, I'm told by my brother who hunted there.

Could be, can't tell by looking at the barrels.
.458 Win Mag is widely available for bolt actions, so double express makers have set up for it, too.
It requires the trick extractors developed for rimless cartridges, but those usually work.
I haven't tried such a gun, I don't know what they do for the reload.
With the superior rimmed cartridge, you just drop them into an unobstructed chamber.
