It was the opening day of pheasant season in Idaho today, and Gus the young Vizsla has his first successful wild pheasant hunt under his belt.:) Now he might be disappointed to go back to looking for quail near the house. Too bad the WMA where we went today isn't exactly down the street.

This is my first hunting dog, and I've been learning about training him, and a lot of other things, from the ground up. So this is an exciting milestone for us both.

Thanks for sharing the moment!

congrats!
i have a ball w/ good dogs. i run labs, mostly because they're what i started w/ and i am comfortable w/ the breed. i remember working w/ zeus (my first lab) and he and i had a steep learning curve. he was a great dog and made up for most of my deficiencies as a trainer.

it is a fantastic feeling to watch a dog you've worked all spring and summer put everything together 'for real'...

many more hunts to you and gus!

Me and Raisin are very proud of you and Gus. You've worked your butt off training that dog, and now it's paying off.

Nice one, what WMA did you go to? Ill be home off of leave in a few days but still wont be able to hunt as I have family out. But will hit CJ Strike very soon. I like to go there in the afternoon after a morning of ducks on the snake near Hammett or Loverige bridge.

That's where I was. Tough hunting. 5 solid hours walking, with two Vizslas combing the brush the whole time, and we found 3 birds.

One was walking down the road and I saw it before anyone else did (it was downwind with a 20+ MPH constant wind, so the dogs had no warning). It took off before I was within 100 yards of it. We never could find it.

Two more flushed out next to the water, but one took off over the water, and fast. I shot both barrels and missed. It was pretty far, but I felt obligated to try.:)

Finally got the third. Never found any more.
