DON'T take it out. On that variation the screw holds a spring mounted detent plunger that locks the cylinder crane in place. IT IS supposed to be there. It should have a milled "gutter sight" - if not there will be a transverse notch cut into the top rear frame that will hold a small adjustable sight blade. Can't see enough detail from your picture.
