Vets don't need a 214, anyone has to show citizenship, a birth certificate is fine. You also have to show membership in a gun club, or veterans org like VFW or American Legion. You can join the Garand colectors club at CMP to satisfy that requirement. Good folks at CMP, they will get you going. An M1 Garand is truly a piece of history and won't be availible forever. By the way they are 30/06 not 5.56.

Just go to the CMP web site. It is spelled out in there exactly what you need to qualify for CMP purchases......chris3

You could undoubtedly trade your WRA hammer for an HRA hammer and maybe a few $.

Your 5.56 Mil serial number puts your rifle solidly in HRA's 1955 deliveries and earlier serial numbers have been observed with 1955-dated barrels.

But the DD214 shows marksmanship, unless you have another route. So, for vets, it is often the easiest.

OP, if you're happy with it, you got a good deal.

I have thought about tracking down all H&R parts just to have a correct rifle. Did H&R use the same revision numbers on their parts from the beginning to the end of production?

And Tim I love the Tom Brands quote!

You will have to get the correct parts for your serial range. How about the stock, is it HRA?

There were fewer, if any, revision changes with the H&R M1s. There are reports that some rifles were delivered with Springfield parts but some folks dispute that.

If you are interested in getting the correct parts for your rifle, get a book or two on the Garands. Scott Duff has published a couple, one on WWII era and one on post war era Garands. There are a couple other good ones out there as well.

The records kept on post war Garands is not as good as during the during the war. Some of the nitty gritty details just do not exist like for the WWII Garands.

Enjoy your new rifle.

I couldn't tell you if it was an HRA or not. What would I be looking for to determine if it is an HRA stock?
