H110 and mag.spp

H110/W296 requires high pressure to to get a good clean burn. A heavy crimp is required. With H110 being a ball powder it's harder to get started particularly during cold conditions. During hot weather Std primers can and will work if your running a heavy crimp. Mag primers will give you a more consistent burn due to the longer brilliance burn even during cold conditions.

When we say heavy crimp on 357 can that be taper or has to be roll crimp?
Preferably roll crimp I have tried taper but had issues with bullet backing out under recoil, I locked up the revolver which is a pain in the butt. I have never used it on 357 since it does work well with 38 special with a HBWC. Magnums just need a roll crimp IMHO.

For what it could be worth….
I have/am using Standard Small Rifle primers along with H110/W296 for 30 M1Carbine rounds having no issues……
…..’cept the aimer……..
Small rifle primers tend to be a bit hotter, although I have read somewhere one of the brands they're the same force. Can't remember which it was and dunno if I'd believe it.
I've used standard small pistol with 296 and didn't notice a difference. I'd have to put em over the chrony. But no matter what, 110 means heavy charge, and one should always put a good crimp on those. I always do

I need to get me a 38/357 roll crimp die then. I only have taper

well you certainly don't HAVE to....its not unsafe at all IMO but for reasons mentioned above I do use magnums unless I just couldn't get them. Just about all of my .357 loading is with H110

With H110/win296 I always use magnum primers, and a FIRM ROLL CRIMP

this is what magnum revolver is all about

I like watching the normies at the range go pop pop pop pop with their mouse 9’s and they get disrupted by the old man with big revolver B A N G!!! Startles em lol
I have had some complain to the RO or leave.
Back to H110 full house loads, mag primers and a firm roll crimp. SRPs when out of mag primers works as well. H110 does not like to be loaded down. That being said .357 gets 2400 with SPPs these days.

I don't use magnum unless the load books call for it....certainly I use SR primers for the 30 carbine with H110 and shotgun primers for 410 shotshells.

I went to a range with a friend several years ago I took my Ruger Super RedHawk in 454 Casull loaded with a heavy charge of W296 and a Hornady 250 grain XTP Mag bullet and a SRM primer after one cylinder full I was told not too shoot it anymore that I was scaring the shooters on both sides of me because it was so loud. I looked at the RSO and said this is a gun range isn’t it so why does it matter what I am shooting he looks at me and repeats the same thing I told him if this scares them they shouldn’t be here . I blasted off 5 more and left along with my friend we have never been back last I heard it closed permanently.

I've used H110 with CCI small pistol primers for 357 mag with slight roll crimp for some time, never had an issue.

Oh man not to drift but I had a range tell me that I was not allowed to shoot my scoped SBH .44mag with 7.5 inch barrel on the 50 yd line. Told me I had to keep it on the pistol range since it was a pistol at 25 yds max. I left and never went back to that range. 24 gr of H110, mag primer and 240 gr JSP makes up a fine hunting round imo.

I use both and don’t really notice much difference if I run out of magnum primers I just use standard and just make sure you have a heavy crimp
.......just as important as a heavy crimp when using standard primers with H110/W296 in .357, is to be at the top of the charge rate.

I use magnum primers (or WLP that are rated for both) with H110, partly because it's recommended, and partly because I know that it could make a difference in colder weather. On warm days you won't see any difference, but if you happen to shoot those loads when it's 40º you may very well see a difference.

I also use a healthy crimp for magnum loads using H110, which of course is another thing that this powder prefers.

I was impressed with the h110 this morning never noticed any flash like in that picture. Accuracy at 25 yards was excellent..

More uniform ignition w/hotter mix, thicker cup to resist top-hatting, flattening or primer flow back with the higher pressure envelope. (Helps resists piercing) Lots of good reasons.

H-110 / WW-296 is the reason Small Pistol Magnum primers were invented.

The some of the older manuals said a magnum primer was required. I've followed that advice and never regretted it. My favorite fireball is the one from my TC .357Max using a full power load of H110. What's unique about the picture is that the fireball is in the full sunlight and still quite visible. Usually they wash out in full sun.
