I use h322 and h335 for 223rem rounds and see on hodgdons website its compatible with 45-70 lever actions.

im shooting a cva stalker single shot in 45-70 govt for hunting purposes.

has anyone used h335 and h322 for 45-70? I would like to use it because I use it already and one less powder to mess with.

thanks.

I dont loqd for a 45-70 but looking at hodgdons site it looks like both should work great for most bullet weights. Your stalker is plenty strong enough for levergun loads, id avoid "modern" loads, but thats just cause hinged actions tend to flex pretty good, and anything in that power range is gonna be brutal in a gun that weight.

Just because a powder is listed for a cartridge doesn't mean it should be used. There are many better choices available.

Just a note, you making several similar threads on the same topic is getting confusing. The question on these two powders would have fit very well in your other 45-70 powder/primer thread.

didnt see the other powders listed until after today and the other was posted yesterday. I figured different question different thread.

Try them and see if your rifle likes them. If you look on many boards about reloading the 45-70 you'll see you've already been given the 5 powders with the best reputations for accuracy in large straight walled black powder cartridges. Imr 3031, H4895, Imr4895, Rx7, and 5744.

I'm sure your rifle would do better than these targets as this is what I could achieve with a 127 year old rifle with iron sights, a steel crescent butt plate, over a bench at 50 yards. One thing you're missing is that while there's quite a number of powders that have a burn rate that will work with loading in the 45-70, many of them are position sensitive. That can have you chasing your tail with load densities low enough that you can come pretty close to double charging your powder and still be able to seat the bullet.

Ohihunter,
Nothing wrong with asking. But I almost posted what ArchAngel did about the different threads. When you get in a situation like that, just update the thread. No biggie. Your best powder for being able to reduce loads with those bullets is what I said in the other thread. IMR or H4895. 3031 is a great powder for the 45-70 but it shines (in my 1895) at higher charges with 405's. And it lets your shoulder know it's having a good time. I have read that lots of people use H322/H335 in the 45-70 and get good results. But testing loads to find what your particular gun likes is just part of the process and part of the fun. Give it a go and see. And report back on what you find. Good or bad.

the 325gr flex tip shoots great in the factory lever evolution ammo at 100yards but I didn't care for the performance on a deer last year so figured try the 300gr HP.
