I just want to confirm what I’ve seen that the only load data for H4198 and 308 only goes up to 130gr bullet?
I have load data for the following powders and have it on hand. Just wanting to see what else I can use the H4198 for.
Thanks for the help.
H4895
Varget
H335
Ramshot Tac

Yeah 4198 is awful fast for 308.
I hear fellows do use it with cast boolits though.

I used to use it quite a bit for driving tacks with a 223/5.56 and 50-55 gr bullets. I’ve kinda moved away from it and use 3031 there instead.
I do still use it (the IMR version) in 45-70, 7.62x39 and 221 fireball.

Ok thanks that’s kinda what I thought from what I’ve read.
I guess I’ll look up data for 223.
I try to get powder that I can use I’m both 223 and 308 but was able to get a pound today so it will be used.

Yes, it would be for reduced loads or cast bullets. I have an accurate IMR 4198 reduced load with 150 gr. jacketed bullets in 30-06 that I like so it can be done. Reliable data is hard to find though.

4198 it a good powder but you have some better ones there for 308 ( Varget my favorite for 150G) 4198 burn rate is about right for small case stuff 17rem 300blk subs I did play with it when I was messing with 308 subs too.

I found the data for sub loads which I pray I may need to play with soon.
The H4198 was the first pound of powder I have seen local in months. I knew I had seen it for the cartridges that I have but didn’t have any info when I bought it. I got home and I could only find data up to 130gr so figured I would ask.

Its realy too fast for 308 in my eyes, but these days I do the same thing when I see powder even if Im not familiar with it still buy some

I see your in Texas. If your close to DFW I can tell you a place that still has some pistol and shotgun powder left.

Ya Im down by Waco, I think im ok on pistol powder but thanks though be sure to check that reloading thred where components avalible, I have not had any problems getting powder in the last bit porbably picked up 40+ lbs.

I use one of the 4198's for almost all of my cast rifle loads, including .308, where it is excellent.... but like others have said, with jacketed 150's I step up to IMR3031 or IMR4895. Granted, I'm loading for a gas gun (M1a.)

Going to load up some 55gr .223 and see how it does in my "eats everything" AR. I have 8lbs of the stuff to load 300blk subs, but I'm not shooting that right now.

Now yer talkin. It’s been my experience that you need to load them pretty stout, and you’ll get really fine accuracy. My best loads were with 21.5 gr (twenty one and a half grains) and Sierra soft points.
this exceeds most book data, so watch yourself. Start low, work up yadda yadda yadda

Yeah, book says 19.0 start. Was planning to start there and go up to 21.4 to be somewhat cautious while understanding many have had issues with lighter loads.

Thanks for the feedback though. Encouraging that it worked out.

An excellent powder for cast. Just please be careful,do plenty of research. The 4198's "can" or "may", get right durn peaky pressure wise when approaching max loads in larger cases. It reminds me of Blue dot in magnum handgun cases. Great powders up to a line in the sand.... stepping over it,don't. And load tables aren't the end all,be all.Go to a slower powder. I'll be shooting H4198 with cast in a 22-250 today,a cpl grains below max. Which isn't in any book I've seen. The max "window" is a shrinking range.... 1/2g jump/increases in load testing is fine, until you get near max, where .2g can change things drastically. Bullet jam and neck clearance can really mess with pressures on 4198.

Think of it as a fast, stepping stone to the 4895's.
