I am now the proud owner of a 6.5” Model 624 .44 S&W Special. It is in amazingly nice condition, only a hint of discoloration on the sides of the front sight and a set of Hogue grips were the only real signs the gun was fired a bit. Cylinder has zero endshake, cylinder stops look clean and it locks up tight just like it’s supposed to.

I added a set of the Thai square butt grips, removed the sideplate and cleaned up the slide and replaced the trigger return spring and mainspring with Wolff springs. By the look of the innards I don’t think this gun was ever opened by it’s original owner. The trigger pull weights are now 9 lb DA and 3.5 lb SA.

I brought a few of my favorites; 200 Gr Eggleston over 7.2 Gr Unique, Brazos coated 215 gr SWC over 6.9 Gr Unique and a Berrys plated 240 gr HP over 6.9 Gr Unique. (I also brought my 5.5” Blackhawk and fired a 255 Gr SWCGC over 7.4 gr Unique through that gun, not the Smith.)

The first six I fired DA at 12 yds with the Eggleston load. A bit low, but pretty close.

12 of the 240 gr PHP, same distance, DA etc. The gun liked this one.

After the 240 Gr load my hands were getting a tad tender. With the 215 Gr SWC I chunked the two low shots early and the high one was my last. :(

I am really stoked about this revolver. I have a GP 100 3” for a “ compact” .44, and now a true target .44 Special to shoot. Plus, it pairs beautifully as a big sister to my 6” Model 66-2.

I had also brought it along and fired a bunch of .38 Special DEWC/3.0 Gr Bullseye loads for fun. :)

I will be looking forward to working up some other loads for the 624 later in the year as I get more time to reload (Busy summer ahead).

Stay safe.

44 magnum has a way of tenderizing hands. I like using a racquetball glove after my hand gets tender. Congratulations on a great purchase.

Fine gun and wonderful writeup. You proved that your loads are working very well. Good to see such nice targets.

If you really want some light loads in your .44 Special try some .44 Russian cases with Unique. Pussycat loads and very accurate.

Very nice. Color me green with envy. The used revolver market consists of slim to none in my area. If you happen across something that strikes your fancy you better jump on it right then becuse it's quickly gone.

Congrats on your new acquisition. It's gorgeous. Add in one of my favorite calibers. Of course, I'm not envious. I'm sure the green tinge will fade eventually. :D

The 44 special is an underrated target round. Cast bullet loads are accurate and pleasant to shoot in a Super Blackhawk and Model 29.
