I went out last week and couldn't get any decent groups with Breneke KO's so I decided to try out some Remington standard velocity Slugger's out of my 870 12 ga. I have another shotgun class comming up at the end of this month at www.tacproshootingcenter.com. I needed to work out some problems that I had shooting the breneke's in my last shotgun class a few months ago with Louis Awerbuck. I couldn't hit anything past 75 yards. I guess they just dropped off too much past 50-75 yards. The remingtons shot alot flatter. I sighted them in to shoot 4-5 inches high at 50 yards. I was doing 4 inch groups of three rounds at 50 yards. I'm using XS sights on my 20 in IC RS barrel. At 100 yards, my poi is the top of my front big dot sight and the remingtons are hitting pretty much right there. I really didn't pull great groups at 100 yards though. But it was alot better than what the Breneke's did. I was starting to flinch a bit by that time. I had to tweak the sight just a bit to get it where I wanted it at 100 yards and by the time I tried to shoot some groups but I was flinching too bad and it was time to pack it up.

Sounds familiar. 20 or so slugs and my priorities shift. Do continue, but take small bites.

FYI, every KO Brenekke 1 oz I've fired at 100 yards has keyholed a little. They do this even when shooting tighter groups than other slugs. Go figure....

I took that class, and learned a lot. Great class...you are in for a treat. I was using exactly the same rig you are, but I put the Knoxx Spec Ops stock on. A limbsaver works well too. I would be interested in hearing a comparison of the class by Louis Awerbuck and the one by Bill Davison. I got a good buy on Winchester Ranger reduced recoil slugs, and used them for the class. I didn't get really good results with them. The Remingtons are the best I have used so far.

Dave,
when I took Louis Awerbuck's class, he remarked that reduced recoil slugs tend to drop off in accuracy farther out. He said that the Breneke's were an exception though. I couldn't hit anything with mine during the class and we were shooting at a steel 15 inch (I think that's how big it was) gong out to 100 yards or so. The other day at the range, I did notice an asymetrical hole in the target board on the 100 yard range with the Breneke's. No key holes but not exactly straight either. I also noticed a far amount of lead deposit in the end of the barrel with the Breneke's. I didn't have that with the Remington's.

Snarlingiron,
I'll definatley post an AAR of the class. Bill is an oustanding and competent instructor.

Flip, the KOs are the most accurate slug in both of my slug shooters. They keyhole consistently. Each slug matches the yaw of the others.

This matters little, considering my typical shot on whitetails is well inside 50 yards.

Shotgunning still has a touch of the arcane about it.
