I'm in Montgomery county. There are no public indoor ranges inside of an hour of me, except for one range that makes you buy ammo from them. There are few public outdoor ranges too.

You have to join a private gun club if you want to shoot a few times a month. I'd join a club, but they want you to volunteer at the range a few times a month. I really don't have the time to do so between my job and my young children. I'd rather pay double the required membership fees than volunteer. Shooting is not my life.

I could drive to the NRA headquarters range, which is about an hour away, but it's not equipped for long range rifle shooting.

Sorry to complain, but I need to vent. I miss WI!

You should have moved to Virginia and commuted to Montgomery County.
It's better in the free states.

Blue- You're welcome to come home to Wisconsin anytime.

The Packers are great. The weather is agreeable (which isn't typical this time of year). Guns, ammo and ranges are plentiful. Employment may be another story however.

If I stay here when my lease is up, I will move to VA. I wanted to rent for a year before buying. That said, the commute from VA sucks. I'm really not a fan of the DC Metro area at all.

I work with investments, so there were not many related jobs in WI, or else I would have stayed. I may head back to Long Island, NY or try Pittsburgh.

BTW, while I root for the Packers when they play every team but ONE, I'm a NY Giants fan forever. That's the only good thing about DC, seeing the Giants at least once a year.

I have to go back to MD soon for college. I'm spending all the time I can here shooting and gun geeking out. It could always be worse... PRNJ. I feel for your, having gone from a nice state to a bad state.

You should chaeck out the Izzak Walton League in Damascus. It's not just a gun club. There's a very active membership in all facets of the sport, as well as game dinners, BBQ's, family events, and children's programs since you mention your young children. Since you are not a native to this area, there will be priceless social contacts to let you know about the best place to find a good hoinest mechanic, where to get this or that, who to use, and many of them will be your fellow members. There's a lot an organization like the I.W.L.A. has to offer besides a place to shoot. Fellowship, and help if you need it. In the 25 years I've been a member, it's been a great bunch of people. You may even find new clients among them. If you're in the investment field, a club with 1000 members is a lot of contacts.

I've lived in Maryland most of my life, and it's what you make. And trust me, you don't want to deal with the Beltway in rush hour commuting from N. Va. You'll really hate life then!

ha ha... I USED to live in Maryland... hated it... HATE it more & more every time I go back to visit

If you want to shoot rifles in highpower rifle competition, you should come to our monthly match at Fairfax Rod and Gun Club.

I recommend the AR-15 for our matches.

You will need the rifle, two magazines, about 100 rounds of ammo, and some sort of spotting scope - even binoculars can work.

Next match is January 21.

I grew up there. Not sure about weather agreeable. ;)

I just spent the past 6 mos in MD. I've since moved back down to FL(neener neener) for school & such. While you're up there, look up the Associated Gun Club, of course the NRA range, and I frequented Hap Baker shooting range in Carroll County.

The Isaak Walton in germantown requires you to volunteer, but only 6 hours a year. And if you don't do that you can pay an additional $75 the following year's membership fee. To have unlimited range privileges however you need to show up for two afternoons a year to be range master at the pistol range. I would bring along my pistol box and shoot the whole afternoon! :)

I also signed up and joined the Damascus Isaak Walton as well bc it has way better rifle shooting. As Carl said it is a much larger chapter and more socially active than the one in Germantown but Germantown is probably closer to where you are. Where are you?

I went to the Patriots game in DC last weekend. It was nice but too much of a nail biter!
