I took a lot of different paths on my way to the range today.. I bought handloaded .45ACP from the gunrange guy (I asked him if my gun exploded would he give me another one and a box of commercial ammo to go along with it first. He said sure), took my friend's glock 21, and.. took my fiance! She's always told me that she hates guns because they represent violence. After a couple of days of detailed debunking of her fears of guns, I told her I wanted her to go to the range with me for some casual introductory shooting sessions. Since we haven't been together much in the last couple of weeks she said sure simply cuz she wanted to be with me (or atleast that's what it seemed like)
anywho, get to the range, I pull out the AK, the 10/22, and the glock 21. Line up all the mags I planned on emptying and told her to have her pick.
She picked up the 10/22 first and said she was afraid to shoot it because it looked like it'd kick too much, so I took it from her and popped a round off and she instantly realized it was just a little pea shooter (for the most part).
I let her shoot for a sec and she was doing really well but thought not because she wasn't hitting where she aimed, so I quickly adjusted my 5$ red dot sight and it turned into the tack driver of her dreams. She didn't seem all that enthused with it though, so I pointed over to the AK. Nope she said, too scary.. Ok, 45 time. I know she's shot .45s before, but never a glock, so I give her a really brief instruction on how to operate it, and dump a mag of the handloads to make sure she wasn't gunna have a bad experience by having a gun blow up on her by bad handloads. Everything went ok, and i let her take it from there.
WOW, she's a stupidly good shot and thinks she's bad! She nailed the X on the target (roughly 1sq" @ 15 yards) til it was no longer a part of the target, then continued to chop circles in it like she'd been shooting for years.
then I forced her to shoot the AK by giving her the best guilt trip I've ever done in my life. 3 shots and she said it was quits, so I bumpfired 5 mags back to back and got a big grin from her, and she finally believes now that I'm not full of hot air when I say how fun shooting is.
Best damn range trip I've ever been on!
Couple things though - When shooting the glock, accuracy is friggin dead on. One of the most accurate firearms I've ever shot once I got used to it.
Her though, she was a step above surgical with the glock, but the brass kept ejecting RIGHT into her forehead almost every time, but when I shot the brass ejected to the side. I dunno what the deal was there, I guess grip may be the culprit? She couldn't actually hold up the 10/22 much less the AK, I kinda had to help support her when she shot those, so I dunno what the deal is with her and the glock.
No malfunctions from any firearms though (including the 10/22 which is surprising. I was using my crappy eagle 30rder that ALWAYS jams atleast twice. Nope, not today even with old watersoaked .22LR it worked flawlessly)
ETA - Also fondled a few pistols, and I'm 100% dead set on a 1911. Colt commander was my favorite. I was surprised at how thin it was compared to all the double stack pistols I've been shooting. Fits me like a perfectly crafted glove specially built for my hands.
that's with standard wooden grips. Also handled taurus's new 1911 but didn't like it nearly as much. felt sturdy though, for the most part.
