I would carry and not think twice about it. If I can't quit the job for whatever reason, I have to take the moral highground and defend myself as much as possible. A knife clipped to the pocket is a great thing, as is a good flashlight like the Pelican M6 or Surefire 6P (both being used as a fistpack or gouge and not as a "blinder"). A can of Fox OC spray on the belt would be great, especially indoors where you don't have to worry about wind direction.
Unfortunately, most badguys can be expected to have a gun. And a gun beats OC spray every time.
Arm yourself as best you can. Don't skimp on the caliber, but don't try to carry a Gov't Model in your shorts, either.
Far better to be tried by twelve than carried by six. And, it is far easier to ask forgiveness than beg permission.
