Handgun hunting revolver

I hunt with revolvers exclusively. I prefer big-game hunting over all else and use a variety of calibers from .44 Magnum up through the various .500s. The challenge is the attraction for me.

The 44 magnum is the only "revolver" caliber I hunt with, but when I need to stretch things out a bit, I reach for my T/C Contender to handle the long range stuff.

My primary hunting revolver, a Dan Wesson in .45 Long Colt. Built it over 20 years ago, used it on Kodiak Island blacktails for several years. Primary hunting load was the same as my IHMSA silhouette load - 300 LNF cast over 23.0/W680 for 1080 fps. Very effective on deer and gave me some peace of mind when I ran into a brownie (which happened all the time but fortunately I never had to shoot one).

I haven't had any luck yet but I keep trying. As of late I'm going to start load development for this 45 Convertible Bisley.

MidRoad,

I was shooting from a box blind 20 feet off the ground, and the shooting rest that I shot off of was a 2X4 that had a 1/4" pad of leather on it. This 2X4 was the bottom of the window seal. I was sitting on a padded stool, shooting with a 2 handed hold.

How well do you like that hammer and grip style? Good looking gun for sure!

They feel great in the hand. I've had three regular new model Blackhawks over the years and just couldn't jive with them.

I told myself a long time ago that if I was ever going to get another blackhawk, it'd be a Bisley and I waited a loooong time until Ruger dropped a limited run of these convertibles I just couldn't hold off.

Any of three, a 29-2 6", a Three Screw Super, or my Contender 45 Colt. Funny thing is that two of the first three deer I killed with a handgun are shot with a 6 1/2" 357 Blackhawk and a 2 3/4" Security Six. No problems but not my first choice now.

If one is in 45 Long Colt, what is the other cylinder in?

My hunting revolver is a Freedom Arms 353 Casull loaded pretty hot with 180 grain bullets. For longer range stuff I use my Contender in .375 WinHy.

My initiation to handgun hunting paralleled my initiation into re-loading with a S&W .41 magnum.

Then, because I was so enamored with it and the weirdness of taking game with a .41, I got a Dan Wesson in .41.

The pleasure with them caused me to concentrate on reloading to hunt with my first revolver; a DW .357. THAT was rewarding and fun!

Never once used a scope nor did I contemplate it ever again after firing a pal's scoped revolver. Just isn't for me. Don't get pissy over that, I get others using them...just not me.

Interestingly - I'm still ill-disposed to contemplate a scope but I am flirting with the notion of a micro-red-dot like a Dokter or similar.
for mule deer or an antelope herd I've been scouting for years and have identified a couple-three choke points for.

Interestingly, I see that in merely 22 posts, 3 different fellas note 5 different Dan Wessons for hunting.

Todd.

When I hunted I had success with the 44 and 41..

I have a first model TC Contender with a few barrels.. One is the .30 Herrett is one of the "shoot able" bigger hammers..

Love the Contender, especially the old style.

I shoot the following cartridges in my Contenders:

17 HMR

7mm TCU

250 Savage Ackley Improved - Rimmed

7X30 Waters

30-30 Ackley Improved

308X444 Improved

357 Maximum

444 Marlin

If I can't kill it with one of these, then it's impossible to kill!

I hunt with flintlock rifles on occasion but prefer revolvers in general - especially now that my home state has essentially banned lead for hunting.

As far as sixguns go, I actually have been working my way down the power scale. I started with five shot .45 Colt loads, then to the .44 Magnum, and after a brief dalliance with the .500 S&W, have "graduated" to the .44 Special for most things. I find that for small hogs - which make up the great majority of my hunting - the Special is nearly as effective as the big boys, while carrying and shooting it are much more enjoyable. A brief conversation with Mr. Prasac has discouraged me from pursuing the .357, but it still is in a corner of my mind...
