I hadn't noticed these before, but I wasn't looking, either, and I'm curious. What is the scoop on these pistol gun kits?....like this one on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=73948&item=7129193780&rd=1

and this one on gunbrokers.com:

http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=28093625

I've seen a bunch of them on www.gunbroker.com where it is a complete handgun, minus the receiver/frame. Are these guns confiscated by police departments and instead of them being totally destroyed, being sold for parts, or is this a new twist on selling stolen guns? I'm assuming confiscated firearms, but I'd never seen them before or heard of them....so, what's the scoop?

Probably a police department. If it was a stolen gun, they could make a lot more selling the whole thing on the street.

If the police department sells it like this, they can tell the complainers that they are not putting guns on the street, and that they are making money for the department. Of course, selling a whole gun would be better, but we won't go into that...

Kinda hard to believe any PD would have the time and ability to dissasemble the various & sundry guns they confiscate?

Where I live they used to bring guns in to our incinerator in 55 ga. drums when the state had a $50.00 no questions asked "buy-back" deal going on. Got lots of Lorcin's and Raven's......

These are law enforcement, (local or federal) revolvers that have been scrapped when the department bought new guns.

In past days most agencies, including federal, traded the old guns in a deal for new guns.

The dealer then sold the guns on the commercial market.

In our new Politically Correct times, many departments now sell the guns to companies who destroy the guns by cutting the frame in half, then the pieces are sold as parts.

The companies are required to destroy the guns as part of the deal.

So, what you see here are perfectly serviceable guns, paid for by taxpayers, destroyed, then they use the taxpayers money again to buy NEW guns.

Majority of these so called parts kits are from police department evidence lockers, turn ins, confiscations, service, ect. Most PD's today are forced to destroy this pistols as it is now the politically correct thing to do to stop evil handguns from reaching the street.

Usually if the gun was stripped down properly you get all the parts but the frame itself. I have purchase a few of these sets on ebay and use them for spare parts for pistols I own. As long as you don't let the bidding get out of hand they are an excellent source of parts. It's also nice to have something to experiment on rather than your own gun.

For example, I picked up all the parts (but Frame) for a Walther P99 in 40 S&W, for less than $100. I bought a barstow 357 Sig barrel to fit it, installed sights on the slide that zero the 357 Sig caliber (these really shoot flat). I have found using 40 mags, I can drop this top assy on my 9mm or 40 frame P99 and have a P99 in 357 Sig. Plus I have all the other parts as spares.

I will admit this works best for SA Pistols, Revolvers are a little tougher to work with, but if you want to change the barrel in your revolver or convert an extra cylinder to moon clips, you have some low cost parts to play with.
just don't get carried away with the bidding.
