We have a regular gun safe, but it is too far away and too slow to get into for ready access of self defense guns.

We need a small handgun safe in the bedroom that will fit my wife's gun and mine, where we can stow it away after carrying during the day, and still get at the guns quickly if needed.

Being able to access the guns quickly in the dark is a necessity. It doesn't have to be high-level-professional-safecracker-proof - the main person I'm trying to keep the guns away from is an 8 month old baby (who will unfortunately keep growing and increasing capacity for mischief).

I know there are several brands of varying quality - does anyone have any recommendations?

Hopefully I would like to keep this under $200

Good Question!

I was just thinking about this the other day.

My advice is to just get a cash lock box and gut the interior and put a little foam in the bottom. Since you only need it to be baby proof I'd just keep the key on the nightstand or in the same drawer with the box. At least until he/she is old enough to put keys in locks, then you may want to upgrade or keep the key on your person's.

The one I saw at Target was only $20 but I think it would only hold 1 gun. I'm sure they make bigger one's so you may need to shop a bit.

I was planning on drilling a couple of holes through the bottom so I can bolt it to my nightstand drawer. just to keep it from sliding around if the drawer is opened in a hurry and to keep some one from just walking off with it.

If you wanted to get real creative you could put a spring on the inside so when you twist the key the lid pops up.

When I'm home (inside my house) my Liberty residential security container
is never locked; for fast access too any firearm that I may need. But, if
I go out into the yard (or leave my home for any reason) it is secured;
and all other security measures are put into place~!:D

I like the SecureVault Electronic top-loading model. It's not the fanciest, but it'll keep the kids hands off and still be reasonably quick to open. I've got a couple of them discreetly bolted to various bits of furniture. They sell for $80 or so locally....

Here's my reply in an earlier thread where many of us agreed that R&D Enterprises HandgunSafe was our favorite.

I have model #4811S from www.handgunsafe.com and I love it.
The thing is insanely rugged compared to all the other small, quick-access safes I've ever checked out it's built like a tank. What got my attention was that during a comparison test of gun box safes a few years back, it was the only one they couldn't break into.

I had a Gunvault, and it was nice, but it ate batteries like crazy, and I found the battery box to be mounted in a very awkward spot/angle when my vault was bolted to a surface. I just did not enjoy the sensation of going for my gun, only to find the safe didn't have enough power left to open the door.

Anyway I like the Handgun Safe a lot, and it's tough, heavy/thick, and its custom-combination mechanical lock always opens for me.
