Just finished reading the editorial in the December 2006 Harper's. It's entitled Loaded and it is one of the most literate and compelling pro 2nd Amendment pieces I've read.
It starts with Orwell's quote about the rifle hanging on the wall of the working-class flat, continues through Thoreau and on to the following, "Like democracy, for example. What is that creature, if not the offspring of literacy and ballistics? Once a peasant can shoot down a knight, the writing is on the wall, including the writing that says, 'We hold these truths to be self-evident.'"
