has anybody here modded their benchmade clip to have countersunk screws?

I recently bought a bugout, and while I mostly like the knife, the clip screws bother me. Has anybody ever modded their clip to take countersunk screws so the heads don't catch on your pocket? Or seen one modded they could point me to? I know I could buy a replacement clip from Lynch or mxg or somebody but I've already overpaid for a knife, I hate to spend more on it.

basically I want to convert this

Can you get to the holes in the clip to countersink them?

If you can and you can find the correct screws, go that route. Even if the screws are long, you can cut or grind them down.

Looks like I could get a bit down there to the holes. IF it was pretty narrow.

And you're not drilling the scale, you'd be drilling the steel clip. (This pic is my knife. The others were internet pics because my camera was not handy)

The head angle of a flat-head screw is 90 degrees, while general purpose HSS drill bits (the ones found in any hardware store) have about 120 deg. drill point. There are drill bits with 90 deg. points, but they are harder to come buy. And, as already mentioned, thin steel is not really countersink friendly. Not friendly at all... Don't bother - use it as it is and you will soon find out, that there really isn't a problem with the screw heads catching on anything.

Most countersunk screws are 82 degrees. I don’t know how they measure that but that is some sort of industry standard.

Either way, an 82 degree countersink but would have to be used to even make a marginal countersink in the clip. Most countersink bits have a large diameter for a more universal application to many different sized screws and heads so the countersink would likely have to be modified to fit the tight approach of those screw holes.

It will be hard to find a screw with a small enough head and large enough stud to be perfectly countersunk into the relatively thin material that the clip is made out of.

I would find the diameter and pitch of the screw holding the clip on currently and find a lower profile pan head screw that is also torx drive.

Those Phillips drive screws don’t really even look like they belong there. They don’t match in drive type or profile and if that is a brand new knife, are poorly executed.

I found this on eBay, deep cover pocket clip. Notice the clip with the mounting holes counter sunk for the screws.

This is for the 535 and 537, if not for yours, you can do a search for the exact model.

A button head socket screw can be ground down to reduce the profile and is a low $ expense. Otherwise those aftermarket clips.

I had some of those clips so went to play with one. I use 0-80 and 1-72 screws so my bit is sized for those and the fit is good. BM uses 2-56 which is a pretty big head, the flat screw will not leave much on this particular clip when counter sunk flush. The clip will likely break due to the reduced metal being modded for a 2-56 flat head. pocket-clip-countersink-October 12, 2023-2474 - Copy.jpg

A bit off topic.... .I contacted Benchmade after losing one of the mounting screws for the clip on my folder... They sent me half a dozen - for free... Fine company service in my book....
