I’d really like to buy one of these (and I want one with a thumb safety) but I can’t find any definite information as to whether or not S&W has successfully addressed the problem of the thumb safety engaging under recoil. Any input would be appreciated.

I'm not that familiar with the EZ so I looked it up. I noticed it has decent sized thumb safeties and began thinking it looks like it should be ridden like a 1911 thumb safety. I then found this American Rifleman article.

Some of our shooters, though, found that, if they gripped the frame with a proper high grip, the firing-hand thumb would engage the safety under recoil. Obviously, this could be very frustrating. The solution, if you want the belt-and suspenders piece of mind provided by a manual safety, is to put the thumb overtop its fairly wide, grooved paddle. Ride it like an extended M1911 safety, just as Col. Cooper taught us.

That's how most (admittedly not all) folks use a thumb safety. It gives you an index point for your grip, a high hold, assists with recoil control, and keeps the thumb safety from being engaged while shooting.

I got one for my wife before the recall was announced. So far, we have not had any issues with hers. Will we send it back in someday......maybe, maybe not. Time will tell. I will say that it is one nice shooter and she really likes it.

The recall has been in place for some time. Anything you buy off the shelf should be fine.

My 82 year old mother has one (without the manual safety you're seeking) and loves it. It's the only semi-auto we've been able to find she can operate the slide on.

My wife has not had any real issues with hers, but she will sometimes use too low a grip and fail to activate the grip safety, she has pretty much got that worked out, but she still needs to work on her grip as it'll sometimes twist in her hand and send the empties straight back into her cleavage, which makes for an interesting and cuss-filled "dance"

Won't be a problem when we hit our not-sumer season, but in the meantime it is motivating her to improve her grip, far better than anything I've been able to say.
