I know that I can't be in possession of a handgun so all of the guns will stay at home as much as I hate the idea. Wish the Senate would get busy and pass reciprocity.

What about knives?

I am going to be going to the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, providing horses for the IEA National Finals show. I have no idea where we will be staying or what the area is like, but I know that during the day I will be feeding and taking care of 6 horses, saddling them for kids to compete on and generally working in the barn. I can't go without a blade of some sort.

I prefer to carry a small fixed blade just to the left of my belt buckle. Will that get me thrown in jail? If I carry a folder it is a home made frame lock that relies on friction to stay closed, which I believe makes it a gravity knife in new york and makes it illegal? I also carry a leatherman supertool 300 on my belt. Is that at least safe? Is there a blade length limit? Can a knife be concealed by an untucked shirt, or do I have to make sure it's exposed?

Really not happy with the thought of driving across 2 states and being in charge of a bunch of horses without even having my normal EDC :(

Thanks for the link, I read through it and came to the conclusion that nothing is safe o_O They really don't define what a dirk or dagger is to know if a small fixed blade is safe, and the description they give of a gravity knife pretty much means any knife depending on how hard the officer tries to fling it open. Guess I can come up with a large slipjoint to take, but talk about feeling naked.

It really stinks that our nation has gotten to a point where this question has to be asked.

My understanding is that only handguns are banned. Do you have a compact rifle or shotgun that might be up for the trip? It's a whole different set of laws.

Heightened situational awareness, and a friend, might be in order...

I live in New York and travel to Syracuse all the time. A one our drive. Been to the Fair Grounds many times. I carry a folder at all times. It is partially visible and not too big. I have it with me at work right now. I have had no issues with carrying. The big place for knife trouble is New York City. My carry knife is a Benchmade Griptilian. If I spelt that right. I don't know of any specific rules for Syracuse or the surrounding areas. If you stay out of those areas that look like areas you shouldn't be in, central New York is a very safe place. Enjoy your visit.

I am going to visit Dayton the beginning of March, the knife goes with me.

ny knife depending on how hard the officer tries to fling it open

In NYC that's certainly the case and the reason why Knife Rights has sued the city and Vance.

Dirks and daggers are generally well defined as designed as stabbing weapons so a blunt tip knife would be difficult to twist into one of those definitions (but don't mistake that some DAs wouldn't try).

I'd recommend getting something like a Spyderco Rescue and carrying it inside your waistband around the horses.

I have several rifles, but they wouldn't really serve me much use as I'd have to leave them in the truck or hotel, and I'd have to have an explanation for why I had them. I think long guns are a gray area where you can still get in a lot of trouble, where as handguns are cut and dry you just can't have it.

I am going to tell the horse coordinator for the show that if she ever wants me to come again it has to be a gun friendly state, but I don't think they like me enough for it to get me anywhere

It's nice to hear that it's not hard to stay out of trouble. I don't drink or go to bars and keep things very low key. I don't expect to have any problems but I also don't need a state trooper to walk into the barn while I'm cutting a bale of hay open or cutting a bandage off a horse and flipping out. I would worry a lot less if we were going to a private facility and not a state run facility.

Dayton has some very nice areas and some very not nice areas. Far as I am aware your benchmade is perfectly legal though.

I have the byrd version of that in the larger model. I always grab it if I'm going to be doing ground work with a colt, or roping something. It doesn't open with a wrist flick very easy but if you pinch the blade and fling the handle down, it snaps right open which makes me wonder how safe a choice it would be. I may do something like that for emergencies and leave it concealed, and carry a trapper or stockman for mundane jobs. I think my leatherman is safe enough but it's not the same as carrying a knife, kind of a jack of all trades master of none kind of thing. If I bought a surge or wave where you can open the blades one handed it would be slightly better.Pretty dumb that with all the handmade knives I have around here I have to consider buying something for a weeklong trip.

My current EDC fixed blade is far from a dagger but probably too pointy to gamble with.... S021-DSCF0716.JPG

No one can tell you if that's ok since too much depends upon the officer, but a drop point shouldn't fail the dirk/dagger test. What's the blade length on that?

3 inches. I've carried it all over Ohio, Kentucky and PA, but I think I will leave it at home when I go to new york. Maybe at the most I'll put it in the rear toolbox on the truck where I can't be accused of carrying it, but I will have it.

I live in Syracuse and go to the Fair Grounds all the time for different events. I EDC a Buck 110 and similar large folders there, in the city and all over upstate NY. I know many others that do the same. Never any problem. We aren't like NYC or the surrounding areas. You shouldn't have a problem. But NO handguns or semi auto rifles with a detachable mag and pistol grip. They are assault weapons that need registration. Other long guns are ok.

I'd carry what I carried in Ireland: A Swiss Army Knife Explorer and a flashlight. I did that so that it wasn't a locking blade or easily seen as "weapony". I'd probably go with a ST300 or Rebar in place of the SAK in NY.

Nice to hear some positive responses, when you search for info on this stuff all that comes up are horror stories. I will still er on the side fo caution though.

I always carry a flashlight and a leatherman supertool, but like to have a dedicated blade to go with it. The supertool is kind of obnoxious to open just to pop a bale of hay open, and kind of clumsy for other jobs.

Do NOT overthink this; upstate and NYC are night and day; you are using in performance of your job........

I have lived in Reedsport and Skinnyatles and I have done temporary security work in NYC, night and day.In NYC if its a knife thats enough to go to jail.Up state are mostly real people I never had a problem with a small fixed blade hunting knife even at the Fair.A cop did ask about my knife once in Buffalow while I was pumping gas then he saw my VT plates and we talked about fishing the big lakes. If you work with horses a knife is a very important part of the job for safety .Yours and others.

I always have a Spyderco Dragonfly (serrated ) , very small, effective , flashlight and a small Bic lighter.
