Have what it takes to be Minuteman?

Next year I begin getting 4 weeks of vacation at work so I asked my wife if she minded if I drove out to Texas and volunteered for a week with the Texas Minutemen. She is flipping out about this. I told her it is a perfectly safe thing to be doing and something that I can do to contribute. What do you all think? Is she overreacting or what?

We ARE the government, regardless of how our hired hands in the capitol view us. It's about time we started doing the job.

I understand what you're saying, but I'd rephrase it: It's about time we replaced them with people who will do the job.

I was previously in full support of the MM project, but recently some facts (and perhaps rumors if you will) have been brought to my attention to give me pause in lending my support.

First off, prior to late 2004, when did you ever hear of the name Chris Simcox? Anyone? I had NEVER heard of the guy or his organization. Now stop and think for a minute....how is it that a no-name guy like Simcox was able to get so much press attention? And I'm not talking about Drudge or WorldNetDaily, I'm also talking CNN, USA Today, etc. Just how in the hell did he manage to get all that? I mean, christ, CNN!! The commissar of all socialist news companies! CNN is giving him press time and even if it was bad press, it was still press!

Think about that for a second...just how exactly did he manage to land all that attention? Something sounds fishy to me in that regard...almost planted if you will.

It has been said, and this is the rumor I mentioned because the only viable sources I've found were from pothead web sites, that Simcox is in full support of the national ID program which in turn is also the Real ID program. Michael Savage is throwing is full support behind the MM project, but he too is fully in support of the national ID.

Again, doesn't something sound fishy here?

I'm not suggesting too much tinfoil be handed out just yet, but I am bringing it up to make people think for a moment.

Volunteer for the project, pay $50, divulge all your pertinent personal info for a background check....what happens after that? I can understand the need for a background check, that's fine, but what happens to your info after you hand all of it over? Gunowners at least know that form 4473 gets filed away and the BATF ultimately ends up with copies of all that stuff; we at least know where it goes. Where does it go in this case?

Again, don't be too quick to break out the tinfoil, but try to remain open to the possibility that this guy was planted there in an effort to try and flush out the true patriots in this nation to be dealt with at a later time.

I also remind you to not judge me too harshly in thinking I see conspiracy at every turn, because I too thought the same way of the person who presented this same argument to me. Just keep an open mind.

You are suspicious of Chris Simcox because he is getting media attention although *you* have never heard of him before? That's it?!

Maybe he is getting all that attention because of his "radical" idea of doing the job our own government refuses to do? Ya think?

wdlsguy - Thats exactly what I was getting at. when I said my post. I was going to post something similar you just beat me to it. I just was not as elequent as other whom posted the same views.

And Simcox should be easy enough to research if one feels that the tinfoil hats are required.... (I don't think so though.)

Flipping out wife

Sounds like a "male/female" issue: women were designed for communication, nurturing, keeping home and hearth warm and safe. Men were designed to hunt, fight, protect the tribe, and patrol the territory. She'll never really get it. But...perhaps if you put it in emotional terms....you love her, you love your children...you want to protect them and make sure the country they live in remains safe and free. You're doing it for her. Then try to reassure her, it's all professional, no wild eyed loonies with guns...endorsed by patriotic leaders like the Governator of California...it might help her mellow out...or invite her down with you??

Re: Simcox and MinuteMan type operations

I attended, setup and ran the communications section for the original Minute Man Project in South Eastern Arizona. My main gripe about Simcox is that he clearly had no idea or even interest in integrating the available techincal assets into the operation. My como guys more or less had to crash the party. There were also folks there with aircraft and military experience with forward air control. Again Simcox largely ignored the capabilty.

I have followed Simcox for about 3+ years. During this time he has been consistent in his efforts to call attention to the problems of illegal immigration, drug smuggling and related border issues.

Jim Gilchrist, whom I have a reasonably good relationship with, invited Simcox in because he knew the area and had experience on the ground dealing with the issues. This was a good move on Jim's part. To Simcox' credit, in the 3+ years he has been flogging the issue from his newspaper office in Tombstone, he has developed relationships with the Cochise county Sheriff, and the local Border Patrol agents who patrol the area. This made the operation possible and practically guaranteed it's success.

Gilchrist has since moved on to another phase of dealing with the problem. He and a group of accountants, investigators and attorneys are attempting to identify the businesses who illegally hire the illegal aliens. Once identified there will be public demonstrations, boycotts, and both criminal and civil actions taken against the offenders. The intent here is simple. If you dry up the demand for the "low cost" labor offered by the illegals, they are a lot less likely to come north looking for work. The success of this effort is the true long term solution to the problem.

As far as a national ID card goes, most of you know we already have one (SS). The second one is on the way in the form of Federal control over what is an acceptable drivers license. Our congress critters who are looking out for our best interests have already done this to us. The first one has been abused extensively and you can bet the "super" drivers license will be as well. That is another battle to dealt with on another day.

Several of us, who are veterans of the Arizona operation have decided to put together an operation in West Texas. We have chosen not to associate with the Simcox organization mostly to avoid red tape and associated overhead issues. Primary among these issues is his demand for $50 per person for the privilage of volunteering to do public service for the nation.

We plan to do background checks also. This is to protect us and the volunteers from the fruit loops out there. Personal information collected for the background check will be held in strictest confidence. We will follow the same SOP as in Arizona. There will be NO CONTACT/CONFRONTATION /DETENTION OF ANY ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. We will run the operation to provide additional eyes and ears for Border Patrol in that sector.

With respect to the Border Patrol. We have met with supervisors of Border Patrol in the El Paso area and they are very favorably impressed with the success in Az. They are very interested in the additional observation capability we can bring to them. This is key: We observe and report activity to them. THAT IS ALL WE DO. Border Patrol does the apprehensions.

As most of you know, the Sheriff of El Paso county has openly invited Minute Man type operations to the area. Like many other folks, he is sick and tired of the Feds not doing their job. His comments have been publicized through several news outlets.

Now for those of you who want to do some public service, and patriotic public service at that, we need Volunteers. If you can sit in a lawn chair and use binoculars we need your help. If you can walk distances on roving patrols, we need your help. If you are a ham radio operator, we really really really need your help. If you are a pilot and have a high winged aircraft we need your help. If you have prior or current military/law enforcement experience, we need you help.

If this sounds like something you can volunteer you time for, please go to the following Web site and fill out the volunteer form: http://txminutemen.com/

It may take a little while, but some one will be in contact with you.

Woofe, I'm just a "no code technician" class HAM, and all I currently own is a 2-meter hand-held. Can you give out any more info as to what freqs, repeates, and bands you plan to use, so that myself and other HAMs can tell if we would be of any use? Also, will volunteers be allowed to carry concealed if they have a CCW that is honored in TEXAS? Thanks in advane for the info -

I wuz gonna say that Simcox is no secret; he's been around a awhile. Thanks, woofe.

Some areas of the Texas border are darned well dangerous. I'd venture that the Laredo area would be one, because of the Zetas and their attitude of shoot first and question later.

I'm behi9nd trhe curve, but there was a time, a few years back, where drug smugglers were either forcibly buying ranches along the river as smuggling bases, or intimidating ranchers on this side to not report smuggling. This was down near Eagle Pass. I don't know if anything has been done to improve day-to-day safety there or not; nothing has been in the news lately, SFAIK.

Lake Amistad is a crossing area, using boats.

Both sides of the river are pretty much too rugged, upstream of the Pecos River and on up toward Redford. We have fairly small-scale drug smuggling through Big Bend National0 Park and up toward Redford, but relatively few wets. It gets busier up around Presidio/Ojinaga. The highways to Marathon, Alpine and Marfa are chokepoints to inhibit major activity, although there are some optimists...

Amateur radio

The moment an amateur radio operator IDs, it very easy to look up his/her name and home address.

It might be better to use CB (27 MHz) radios, where it's legal to use a "handle" of your choice.

FRS (462 MHz) handhelds work well for short-range communications.
