Another thread get me thinking about people that think it is okay to willy nilly shoot at other people. I am not talking about gunfights, I am talking about some farmer or hillbilly taking pot shots at you because he thought it would be funny.

I have been shot at several times and NEVER was I doing anything to deserve it. Once when I was a boy, I was shot at by a crazy old farmer for cutting across his field. Once when I was out in the counrty, I was shot at by a couple of young men that had AR-15. They were probably 600-700 yards away so that didn't hit us but it pissed me off. There have been other times as well. Never did any bullets land near enough to hear or see but why is it that people think that if they are far away, it is funny to take some pot shots at some other people?

A while back my neighbor was the target in a drive-by shooting, my room took a hit but fortunetely the bullet hit a beam and was stopped. At the time (middle of the night) I was pissed off that people would be lighting off firecrackers at that hour.

My friend picked up my loaded .22 pistol and put a round into the wall about 2 feet from my head...needless to say I don't let any of my guns out of my sight for even a split second. It was my fault becuase I left the gun in the open with loaded magazine in it.

I'm not sure about the 'pot-shots' that your talking about but my father was shot for no reason while he was changing a tire on his truck from about 200 yards away back in the 70's.

If he was just a poor aim or deliberately let me live, I'd have the last laugh ..... and it wouldn't be funny for him.

Every time I've been shot at, it's been for a good reason!

(I'm kidding. I've been lucky enough not to have been shot at.)

I have never really been shot at, but I have had gun fire directed in my general direction. I was at a public range practicing with pistols. A cease fire was called and a few of us went to inspect and set up targets. One nut case decided to start firing while we were down range. I was probably 10 or 15 feet from where the bullets were striking, but that was close enough for me.

Years ago in alaska i was with a friend
and we were checking out a old gravel
pit filled old shot up cars.We hadn't
been there long when someone starting
shooting over our heads with a 22lr.
We starting yelling and the shots
started getting closer.We took cover
and figured out about where the shooter
was,we yelled again but they fired 3-4
more shots that hit near us.I decided
to fire one round from my 357mag.
Seconds later we heard a car start up
and leave in a hurry.After a few
minutes we checked out where they were
parked and found broken window glass
but no blood. We found my parents and
explained what happened, got to a phone
and called the state troopers and made
out a report. We never heard anything
else about it.

Back when I was in the Army, doing some work way south of the border, down around the equator, I got to hear what an AK sounds like from the business end. Never thought it was for good reasons. Still don't. Were doing advising/training and humanitarian work, building a school. Darn insugents/rebels/smugglers/whoever they were. best we could figure, they wanted our equipment and weapons. Didn't like what they got back, I'd bet.

A few seasons back, my friend and I were trapping in a swamp in northern Vermont; we ran a trapline each morning for muskats, mink, and otter... One morning, as we waded down the edge of a stream to the lake, we both caught a load of shot...several shots of heavy pellets... turns out some nimrod out in the lake duck hunting in his blind throught we were ducks! Armed only with my .22 revolver I shot back a few times... mostly high but a clear message that we were most definately not mallards! I still find bird shot in my wool coat!

I was shot with a shotgun when I was little, for sneaking into my neighbors yard to get a football back. (It was rocksalt, and hurt like ...)

Shot at and missed s_it at and hit!

While cruising on a destroyer (DDG) off the coast of VietNam, some pirates tried to move us away by shooting small arms at the ship. While roving patrol I was out on the main deck at night and an incoming round bounced around the deck and mast splattering me with paint and aluminum shavings (no blood lost). They must have thought they were under our guns (the 5"'ers) and that, wrongly, we wouldn't shoot back. L\When I reported in, the skipper had me take out an M50 and put rounds on "any target of opportunity". When I saw a muzzle flash, I drew eights with the tracers until I hit a fuel tank and they blew up. I felt totally justified next morning when we found a boatload of refugees that had met the pirates and not survived. We did rescue more than 200 and took them to Thailand.

I'll go on record now, publicly, and say that there *isn't* a good enough reason to shoot at me.

It just ain't right...:uhoh:

Yep, I was about 15. Walking with two other guys in a field in St. Louis County. Residential neighborhood.

The field was overlooked by some RR tracks, and I heard the little buzzer zip past, turned and saw some dude on the tracks with the pistol. Then WE made tracks. Guy was about 80 yards away, and was probably firing well over our heads, but scary none the less..

Other than being "sprinkled" by birdshot, no, not personally, but many years ago (shortly after WWII) my Dad and some of his buddies were hunting and started to take incoming fire. When yelling didn't stop the shooting, they all returned fire.

These WWII vets weren't playing games, though they had ordinary deer rifles instead of M1's.

The shooting stopped, and they heard a car start and drive away.

They located a (hastily) abandoned campsite with stuff strewn around, and what looked like broken auto glass. No sign of blood. AFAIK, that was the end of it.

I've been shot AT countless times! Rather expected though, during the 13 months I spent in combat back in 1967-1968, and 31 years as a LEO. No hits!

Two incidents that happened when I was a LEO were somewhat "extraordinary"! The first was when my partner and I stopped to check out a couple of gang members. While we were talking with them, I heard a dull "thud" on the concrete next to where I was standing. I glanced over at just the right time to see what had made that odd sound....a bullet bounced into the air! It was the only object in the vicinity, so it HAD to be what struck the concrete! No sound of gunfire prior to that "thud", so it had to have been fired from a good distance away! "What goes UP must come DOWN!"

The second was during a "shots fired into an inhabited dwelling" radio call. The residents of the house that had been struck by a single round of gunfire thought that it had been fired during a "drive-by" shooting. The bullet went through one of their front windows and the husband found the slug on the carpetted floor in the livingroom.

Neither the husband or wife had heard any shots fired, but the wife went ballistic, ranting on and on that it was "racially motivated" and a "hate crime"! To explain, the husband and wife were both black, and the neighborhood that they lived in was predominantly white.

The wife continued to blather about her "racially motivated" theory as I conducted my investigation.
NO gunfire had been heard....the window had a definite entry hole....inside, there was a clear indentation mark on one of the aluminum slats of the Venetian blinds....the slug most likely was stopped by some curtains, since it had been found just a few inches inside the residence. Well, the hole in the window and the height of where the slug indented the aluminum slat disclosed quite a bit of angle-of-drop! It had NOT been fired horizontally, so a "drive-by" shooting was not involved. The interior curtain actually worked to "deflect" the slug just a bit, so my investigation disclosed that the round had been fired at a fairly good distance from the residence, and that it had been another case of "What goes UP must come DOWN".....strictly a "random" shot fired in the air!

Thankfully, the husband was calm-headed and receptive! His wife, however, didn't want to believe any of the FACTS! She did seem a bit more calm when we took a crime report, but her hostility reared up again when she noticed that I hadn't titled it a "hate crime"! Her husband politely told me that he would square things with his wife later. WHEW!

Nope.............

I was definitely stealing the farmer's watermelons back in the 50's. Good thing he aimed at my buddy's butt with the rock salt and not mine.........chris3

Everyone who's ever shot at me seemed to think they had a pretty good reason for doing it.

My opinion on the matter may have been a little different, but nobody was asking me.

How do you figure it's your fault? Negligence is negligence on your friends part sound like he needs firearms training.

I can only imagine what the hunter must have been thinking when the "ducks" started shooting back at him. :D

Sir, the bad news is that the ducks appear to be arming themselves.
..and the good news?
The good news is that their aim is terrible.

Well, the gangbangers and thugs that shot at me on a couple of occassions probably thought they had a good reason, fortunately for them I was not equipped to dispute their findings...fortunately for me they missed and I was able to evade on one occassion and use physical force to put an end to the hostility on the other.

I'm with Biker, there's really no good reason to shoot at me, it just ain't right. :D

Three Times (Same Year - '67!)

(1) Had just passed a party being held at Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi. I was driving my current 'Vette at the time ('64 convertible). After I'd gone about 300 yards down Ocean Drive someone opened up with a revolver. I hit the gas and split. Made a police report.

(2) Covered riots in Buffalo, N.Y. same year as a reporter..shot at twice downtown on Delaware Ave.

(3) Radio station in Corpus had a big picture window the DJ sat in front of. Car took a shot at me from the street (about 100 feet). Felt the round brush the hair on the back of my head..lodged in an Ampex tape deck. 30-06
