Have you noticed ammo prices increasing?

Although they did have plenty of Federal 9mm at $9 a box... good for the range.
And WWB valuepacks at 20.97...

Lately I've found that buying 20 or 50 round boxes are a better deal than the valuepacks.
Just had to buy a car battery today. last time I bought one with my son, the average price was about $60. Now, closer to $80 in the same store.
I paid close to $180 for my last one...

Milk was cheaper 10 years ago too. So were eggs. Bread. Soda. Electricity. Water. Virtually everything. In fact, ammo has gone up in price slower then most of those items. All-in-all, prices are still pretty attractive compared to 10 years ago.
I disagree. The only other consumable good that has doubled in price, that I can think of, is gas.

I can remember buying $11 9mm valuepacks and filling up my hot rod (that had the $180 battery) with 91 octane that cost $1.75 a gallon.

Oh, that $180 battery still cost 180 bucks...

I went to a gun show this last weekend and saw the opposite actually. .223 and 5.56 were cheaper then I have ever seen them, boxes of 500 for $165 and 1k for $295. Wal-Mart around here hasn't changed their prices, but rather the brand that they carry. I guess down here, WWB is harder to come across and they have been selling Federal in its place for the price that the WWB was. I'm fine with that - my guns like it better...

One thing I have really noticed is the price of AR's going back down. I saw a few M&P15's in the $600-800 range (new). Even the guys that sell the fully decked out tacticool AR's weren't going for more than $1100. I was really tempted to pick one up but decided that I didn't need another one yet...Same went for most other guns too.

I guess as we come out of this "buy any gun you can before the ban comes back" scare, we will see firearms drop in price significantly. However, as there are many more firearms that need to be fed, I don't see the price in ammo going anywhere but up in price in the near future...

If the weather gets better, more people go out to shoot. Spring and summer could be profit months for the ammo makers just like the oil companies. They jack them to recoup some losses in the autumn and winter months.

Reasons
#1 Fuel prices are at $3.00 a gallon
#2 The dollar is falling in value
#3 The Chinese, Russians and other overseas Mfgs are pimping thier prices; (I've seen 200% increases in some items from China in 18 months) withholding delivery (some back ordered items will not be shipped untill Dec. 2010!) waiting to see the dollar plunge and reprice using the Chinese YUAN.

I'm inclined to think there will be another run on ammo soon (hope I'm wrong). The powers that be ran the Constitution through a shredder yesterday, and took it out with the trash. This sort of third-world-dictatorship behavior tends to make folks nervous.

Added: don't want to stir up politics, but had to reply to this:
You mean majority rule in a democratic republic?
Yes, we have a republic. As such we have rules and a constitution, not mob rule. I won't go further on this because I remember how careful this site is to avoid offending the more leftist members.

I would not be surprised if the "Majority Rule" tries to ram other "wish list" laws through before they get voted out, such as another "assault weapon" ban. If this talk heats up again, I think it's safe to say the price of ammunition could increase further.

I was floored recently when I walked into a local gun shop and saw 50-round boxes of American Eagle .380 ACP on sale for $13.99 a box. The first thing that floored me was to spot .380 -- haven't seen much of it in months and months. The fact that it was only $13.99 a box put me down for the count.

I don't recall 22 shells being $7.00 a brick 10-years ago even on sale. Sale prices were usually about $10 then. You go back a bit further and yes, $7. The Walmart increase is between 26 and 27% at the retail level for Federal 22 shells. Remington went up a while back.

This past weekend Dick's sporting goods had UMC .45 in 50 rounds box at $18.99 limit three per customer. They also had "value pack" UMC .45 in 250 round box at $119.99 ($23.99 per 50, same exact ammo). So if you want more than your 3 box allotment you pay a $5 per box premium. This strategy was verified by an employee. Now is that smart business policy or shady as a sugar maple?

Supply and Demand. The surge in gun sales especially translates into significant demand for ammunition.

I saw that at Dick's and just walked away scratching my head (I didn't know about a 3 box limit)
