Headed to Chicago for the weekend

I'm not saying that it's utopia. Yes, you can pull out anecdotes all day long . . . but the fact is that Chicago's no different than any city. In your beloved state of Ohio--a great place to live--Cincinnati and Cleveland both have higher homicide rates.

You'll get no argument from me that the gun laws are abysmal. The politics are horrible. And there are certainly segments of society where things are out of control. But your portrayal of widespread mayhem is really out of touch with reality. I can say that with absolute authority as someone who's in the City 250-plus days out of the year. You're simply wrong.

Still, given the choice, I'd always carry.

Gotta agree with Mister Mike. The TOURIST areas of Chicago are as safe as anyplace. Crime, even violent crime does occur there, but it's rare enough to be headline news. Not so on the west and south sides. Murders and shootings are so common in these locations that they are often not on the news (unless there is some unusual side that makes it newsworthy.

The loop, North Mich. Ave., Museum areas, all are really no problem. However, be careful not to stray too far off the beaten path. I teach on the west side, and you can bet the farm I'd never go there at night. In fact, they haven't printed enough money to pay me to go there at night.

The tourist areas? --- go, enjoy

Guns aside, why would anyone go to Chicago if they didn't have to? NY has better museums. Las Vegas has more fun and entertainment. Anywhere has better scenery...

As a non-attorney, I advise you to visit "Hot Doug's" hot dog superstore while you are there.

No fan of Daley, not recommending people visit - but Chicago has great museums - art (one of the best collections of impressionist paintings in the world), science and industry, field museum, Shedd Aquarium (it is really nice), some great resturants ethnic food and deli's, Major League Baseball (American and National League so you can see any team), NFL - Da Bears, NBA - Bulls, also many plays and comedy shows, and the a skyline that consists of some of the most beautiful and tallest buildings in the world.

Me, my dream is to live in the middle of ten square miles in Montanna, with no neighbors, towns, or cities. With a view of the mountains and a creek or river running through it. But really there is no city like Chicago on lake Michigan in America - NYC is bigger and more cosmopolitan, Vegas is a bar hoppers and gamblers paradise, LA is Hollywood and movie stars - but Chicago is a city of skyscrapers set down by a lake the size of a sea in the middle of the prarie.

It is true the politicians are corrupt, the dead vote, the gun laws are obscene and a violation of fundamental liberty, and the ghettos are hell, and you do not want to be off the beaten path at night or even some places during the day. All reasons to avoid visiting the city. But if you do visit for whatever reason - the truth also is that it is a unique and at times beautiful city - though I'll still take Montana.

Suburb

If you want to be legal of this Chicago city limit ordinance...you could get a hotel room in a suburb of Chicago where you'd be legal possessing the handgun. Leave the handgun in your hotel room at night when you go into the city limits.

I have no idea what the violation of this 'ordinance' is if you are caught. In the state I live in...Tennessee....a city ordinance violation is what people are fined over....people have to be charged with a violation of STATE law to truly get in trouble. I know even the DC ordinance handgun thing is a misdemeanor 1000 dollar fine for not having one registered.

Here is a link to this city ordinance...it's a lot of reading but I'm working on it now...you can read through it yourself and see what happens if convicted of their silly ordinance. I've never had my hotel room raided and searched by police over a city ordinance.

You can scroll down to 8-20-140 of this ordinance

look at subsection (f)(5)

There seems to be a group of nonresidents this registration ordinance does not apply to....those who are participating in firearms related recreation inside Chicago and outside....on the way to such activities it looks like the gun has to be broken down, cased...etc.....I'm not a lawyer but reading that I'd feel a lot better in Chicago city limits in a hotel for a short period of time and going target shooting or hunting outside the city with my handgun...but then again I don't have my hotel room searched....and you must have your gun broken down...cased etc..when going to the location....I know if i had to spend the night in chicago city limits i'd have my gun club membership...range bag..etc..and find me a gun range in the suburbs.
