Long story short, was at a county range this weekend (no RO), and had my plugs out to talk to someone during a ceasefire when someone on the range opened up with a .40. My ears are still ringing 24 hours later. :fire:

So I'm looking for electronic muffs so I don't ever have to take them off. Any suggestions?

I've heard there are some that will amplify normal sounds too. I need to be able to use them with a rifle, so they can't be so huge as to interfere with a cheek weld.

Money not really an object.

edit: and when will this ^(*% ringing go away? Idiots.

I got this pair,

http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templ...&parentType=index&indexId=cat20801&hasJS=true

Fairly inexpensive, and work pretty well for me. Once I hit the range, I put them on and leave them on the whole time. No reason to take them off to hold a normal conversation. Battery life ~200 hrs.

I'm sure the more expensive ones may work better, but these are OK for me. I've got a 30% hearing loss in one ear, not from firearms, but from playing in a garage band years ago. What's left of my hearing I'm trying to take care of. ;)

Pro Ears `DIMENSION` Sports Series ---STALKER DIMENSION 1 DSTL-1 made in USA; programmable: soft - best for hunting and range shooting; medium- good for range, noisey work environment; high- LOUD noise environments, jet aircraft, flightline. Uses 4 `N` size batteries( 2 each side). Battery life 200 hours. User can hear normal conversation, amplifies sound 8 times normal, but blocks out any sound above 70db. on all settings. Sound block (called attack time) occurrs in nano second, so fast that you don`t notice it happening. All you may hear is the sound echo fading away as it`s volume drops below 70db., independent volume controls, no exposed wires. 5 year full warranty. Bottom of right muff is padded so as not to mar stock finish. Tactical green, adjustable padded muffs, padded black metal head band. Got mine at Sportsman`s Warehouse. $200.00. worth it. I wear it hunting and I can hear really soft sounds. Far away birds, leaves falling, distant crickets, constant wind sound is not noticeable, but normal. For range use I have programmble setting on lowest setting. The programmable feature is delicate and must be very carefully done, so as not to damage the electronic elements. Use small needle nose pliers or tweezers.

Sordin Supreme Pros

Another high-end option, the Sordin Supreme Pros, made by MSA, are very expensive and worth every last penny.

Waterproof battery compartment, 3.5mm Input Jack and Cable for external Comms interface, 600 Hour Battery Life on common AAAs, and 22 Db NRR.

Also, they have a Soft cutoff on the electronics, which means instead of the amplification cutting in and out from 100% to 0%, it swells the volume up and down smoothly. Makes wearing them much less fatiguing on the ears when you are on the range for hours at a time.

Highly Recommended.

I had a pair of the Sportsman's Guide cheapies... still do, and use them around the house with powertools. They're not bad for the money, but made a buzzing/clicking noise when the batteries got low or if they were near radios, cellphones, etc. Stayed cut off for longer than seemed necessary after loud noises. Got uncomfortable after a couple-hour-long IDPA match.

Recently upgrade to some Radians. Haven't gone shooting with them yet, but they're stereo, which is nice, and lower profile.

I like the Peltor. The larger ones (I forget the model number, I've had them for over 10 years and all the writing has rubbed off) use a 9V battery and have one external control. However, you can pull off the earpads and there is a volume control for each side, inside.

The smaller one, the Tactical 6S, uses 2 AAA batteries inside each earpiece and has an on/off/volume control on each side.

I haven't tested any of the 'new breed' because I haven't needed to.

I bought some Radians via the Internet a few years ago and have been very happy with them. I can't imagine going back to plugs or non-electronic muffs again.
