So with deer season being two weeks away, and this being the wifes first year actually going hunting, we have our first good omen.

During my last trip to the range by myself, I noticed that the ejector on my wifes NEF .270 was sticking...sometimes I had to open the gun 5 or 6 times to get the shell to eject.

Brought it home, cleaned it up as good....ran patchs all through it and around the ejector, opened the gun about 30 times, and each time the ejector popped out fine.

Went back to the ranget today, and after the 2nd round, nothing. I tried opening the gun fast, slow...nothing. I finally had to use my cleaning rod to pop the shell out.

The current load I am using is 130gr load from The Hunting Shack in Montana. I seems accurate, and to my novice eye, there does not appear to be signs of stress on the fired shells. I am 42 shells in to a 100 round order I placed for hunting season, and the problem seems to be getting worse with time. In defence of THS, I haven't tried any other brand since getting this 100 rounds...just haven't had the time or money for brand experimentation.

So, I am looking to see if anyone has had problems with the ejectors on their handi-rifle, as well as advice for how far I can take this thing apart to 'clean out the gunk.'

Thanks folks!

Problems with ejectors on Handi Rifles are common. :cuss: Things you can do to help eliminate them are 1. Always shoot with a ‘dry chamber’ no oil residue if possible, 2. If shooting reloaded ammo make sure it is also free of lubricant, and 3. it helps to polish the chamber with a polishing compound. I used a, I think it was a 20g bore mop and some fine polishing compound and a battery powered drill on my .308 which (cross my fingers) has not jammed lately. The new models come with an extractor instead of the ejector, not that that will help you with your problem. You might check the Handi Rifle section of Graybeard Outdoors for other takes on this common problem.

I recently picked up a Handi-Rifle, in .45-70 and it has an extractor, instead of ejector. Is there any way to convert it to an ejector?

Polish the chamber thoroughly.
Put a bb under the spring to increase tension, after those changes and polishing the chamber, you shouldn't have stuck brass. Be careful not to loose the lifter button in the ejector if yours has one, older frames didn't, here's a pic of the parts in their relative position.

Kestral, you can convert a ejector to extractor, but to my knowledge you can't go the other way around. These guys know for sure. Read all the stickys and FAQs before posting questions.

Cool

Thanks for the link to Graybeards guys...seems like a very helpfull place. I will have to get brave and take the ejector apart I guess...I might just try a nice chamber polishing before trying the bb trick. The wife and I are going shooting next Friday, so I will let you folks know how it works.
