This might be in the wrong forum, but I couldn't think of a better forum to ask. I mean, ya'll are pretty much the ammo specialists of the board, right? </flattery>:)

Here's the thing - I've come upon some hard times financially, and my Yugo SKS has to go. Along with the rifle, I have a (what I think) is a .50 cal ammo can filled with Wolf 7.62x39. I say I think it's .50 cal because when I bought the can, it had all the markings obscured with spraypaint. Dimensionally, it looks to be about as long as a surplus 5.56 can, and about 1 1/2 times as wide. Depth is the same as the 5.56 can.

Anyway - I have it packed literally to the brim with ammo. I was going to sit down and pick it all out and count it up, but I'll be danged if I have the patience and attention to detail to count it all out.

I can tell you this - I've only ever bought one case of 7.62x39, and I don't think I have any leftover boxes in my ammo cabinet. So, logic would state that I have 1k rounds in this can - but it doesn't look big enough to hold that much!

Can anyone help me out here? It'd be awesome if one of you fine fellows used the same storage as me, and could tell me (even roughly) how much I have here. I'm fine with getting a rough count, but I don't want so rough a count that I end up shorting my buyer.

Thanks a ton, ya'll.:)

Sorry about the hard times. Its tough that one has to sell ones guns.

If you can get to a reasonably accurate scale, like at a meat market or something, weigh out 50 rounds. And then weigh the entire batch without the can. Then it is simple math to get a fairly accurate count.

For example, if I know 50 rds weighs, say, 4 pounds and I have 24 pounds of ammo then I have close to 300 rounds in my box.

If your ammo is boxed, a .50 caliber can will hold 900 rounds of 7.32x39.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

It's always tough to sell a gun, but the way I look at it is like this - I've only shot it twice, and don't see myself getting to the rifle range often enough right now to give it the trigger time it deserves. I'd much rather it went to a good home and an owner who can use it well (and often) than sit in it's case waiting for it's turn on the line.

And FWIW - Shortly after I made the original post, I broke down and dumped all the ammo out and counted it. Turns out I have 965 rounds. Oughta bring a decent price, even though I plan on selling it at a discount.

Thanks once again for the replies!

That wouldn't be too hard to count. Dump them all on the floor. Toss them back in three at a time. After every 3 tosses pitch a round to the side. Each round set aside represents 10 rounds when tossed into the container. If that pile is big toss them in three at a time and each one you pitch to the side represents 100 rounds.

Ooops, a bit too late.

Sport - Yeah, I know. I just looked at the can, lifted it, and thought - "Dangit. Oh hey, the folks over at THR probably know! I'll ask them instead!" Super lazy, but at least I admit it. And like I said, I did finally end up counting 'em up.
