That's a Josselyn Chain Pistol, patented in 1866.

With that clue I found the original patent application. (You'll have to go through the free registration process to view it.)

Since it is in the Smithsonian collection, I suspect it is the patent model, probably the one and only. I guess it seemed like a good idea to the inventor.

Check out Browning's Slide gun. He made them up to 25 shots.




You will probably notice that the Museum guy put the slide next to the reciever backwards. Oh well.

Now that chain gun is very interesting. Now if it only had a box attached under it and the chain not continuous. Something like this,
