Ok so I want to get him a gun for his bday and none of my friends or any of his that I know well are gun people so I thought I would just join a gun forum and get some opinions! I don't know anything about guns. I know he likes handguns and that he has a Glock, a smith and Wesson, and a kahr. I only know this because I looked at the cases they are in lol. He's not picky and I know he would like about anything I got him, but I want to get him something maybe different than what he has and I really have no clue about brands. I hate to be the dumb woman on here, but I thought it would be the best way to get some ideas. Thanks!!

Welcome to THR! First of all my suggestion would depend on asking the question "what does he like to do (with the guns)" - meaning, does he have them primarily for self defense, or does he hunt, target shoot, etc.

I see men often posing the question "what gun should I get my wife," and most often the best answer is "ask HER what SHE likes!" In this case, it's a little bit different, but still, I think the answer is right there with him, you just have to SUBTLY figure it out! I'm almost positive that in his mind, he already knows what he wishes his next gun would be.

Also, what's your budget? There are $500 guns and $5k+ guns and all points in between.

Good luck with your purchase! I think your gift decision is on the right track.

Thanks!! I want it to be a total surprise. I guess that's the risk I take- that he won't like it lol. He just target shoots. Doesn't hunt. I guess they are to defend the home also. Budget - I guess up to $1000 ?

Honestly, if you have $1000 to spend, go to a local gun shop and pick up a nice 1911 .45. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't be happy with a surprise like that. There are plenty of brands that will have nice guns in that price range, so pick the one you like.

That's a very thoughtful gift idea.

But in actual practice it is pretty hard to pull off.

Men & Guns are kinda like woman's shoes & handbags.
Either you like them, want them, and buy them.
Or you don't.

How about just getting him a $500 or $750 gift card from his favorite gun store and let him pick out what he really secretly wants.

What's the fun in that? Lol. No I understand what you mean but I guess I'm willing to take a chance. I guess I he really wants something different I'll tell him he can sell it. I want the gift to be more spontaneous and fun than a gift card lol

Biker and jorg- thanks. I'm assuming a 1911 is a type of gun Any certain brands to go after or avoid?

Others may have different suggestions, but a Springfield Armory 1911 Loaded would be a nice gun in that price range.

Hearing the brands of the guns he has. I would recommend a Ruger single action revolver. It's A cowboy gun. I don't know a gun guy around that wouldn't like that as a gift. 357. Magnum or 45 colt calibers is a good choice. A 22 pistol would be my second choice. Just google Ruger. You can also buy online at Buds gun shop online.

My wife had a good idea. She wanted to go for a drive one day(around our first anniversary) and pulled onto the gun show parking lot. Then handed me $1000 and told me to get whatever I wanted. I was surprised.

Desert Eagle.....

Kahr Arms is now offering a free pistol magazine(worth $45-50.00 USD) with the purchase of a brand new Desert Eagle. :D
You can get a .50AE, .44magnum or .357magnum pistol. It's big & not cheap, but he'll get a lot of fun out of it. ;)
Desert Eagles are in use in many Hollywood films & TV series, see; www.IMFdb.org . :D

I would buy a .50AE for collecting, but if he plans to shoot a lot or likes target shooting, get a .44magnum. Note: you can swap magazines/barrels too so he can shoot both calibers with the same model.
Brushed stainless is nice, but the flat or matte black with after-market Robar NP3+ or Metalife would be a nice touch. ;)

The Ti & 24K gold DEs are classy but those aren't really for target use. Note: the 24K gold pistol does not get the free Kahr Arms pistol mag offer.

Here's what my loving wife does:

The gun laws in NYS are cumbersome at best, so there's no way one could gift a handgun by surprise. So she cuts out a photograph, puts it in a gift wrapped box like it's a (boring) shirt or pair of pajamas, and gives it to me. She knows I'm finicky about my guns (and my women :D), so if it's not precisely the model I wanted, no problema. A few clicks on Bud's website and a call to my FFL, that she makes, is all it takes.

BTW, the one surefire gift that all real men appreciate, is …

a flashlight.

:)

Thanks guys for all the suggestions! :) If he knows what's best for him he will like the gun. Lol. Jk

For something he would never expect is buy a black powder cap and ball revolver and starter kit from Cabelas. There are no forms to fill out and it is legal to have the gun shipped to your home. A 1858 Remington revolver is a good, high quality gun. The gun and starter kit runs around $250.00.

There are other models to choose from such as the 1851 Navy and 1860 Army. All of them a high quality guns and are in the same price range .

If there is not a Cabela's nearby just order it online and have it sent directly to you. I am having a lot of computer problems so would someone be kind enough to post a link to Cabelas.

I see a lot of people suggesting handguns and I think a good 1911 is a very safe choice, however, it seems he's already got 3 very serviceable options at this point.

Obviously, I don't know your husband or his tastes, but if I only had 3 guns & all of them were handguns, I'd want a fighting rifle to fill out my collection.

+ Arsenal AK SAM7/SLR-107(http://www.k-var.com/shop/Arsenal-Rifles/)
- These can be found for anywhere between $850 and $1400; if you can find a good deal, you'll have one of the best AK's in production. Check out gunbroker if you don't mind digging around for something slightly used/new. (www.gunbroker.com)

Buying an AK might be a risky option since they're pretty polarizing, but if you want to take a chance, no one could fault you for buying an Arsenal.

I think you should consider a Smith & Wesson 686 revolver for your husband, probably with a 4" barrel.

I think that he already Has a few semi automatics so it is time he added a revolver into the collection. Because it is a revolver, it will always stand out as something different and special from the wife. It will also be something that you two can go shoot together. The weight of the pistol plus some soft .38spl loads should make it manageable even for novices.

This is suggested by someone who collects 1911 pistols, btw!

I'm going to have to agree here. Unless he just plain dislikes revolvers, a nice, high quality double action .357 magnum is an essential part of any well-rounded, respectable collection. And it's pretty tough to beat the S&W 686 for that role.

I'll go with what others have been saying, Smith & Wesson 686 revolver with a 4" barrel or a really nice 1911.
