I have a .38 H&R Old Model Hammerless, 5" bl., serial #260xx. On top of the barrel, "Harrington & Richardson Arms Company Worcester(no "h" after the "c") Mass. U.S.A. Pat. Oct.4 '87,May14 & Aug.6 '89,April2 '95,April7 1896". When made and type of powder? Thanks

Well, I've found that it probably (most likely 100%), is black powder. Guess I could use it as a conversation piece, paper weight, or a small hammer.:( Any other nice/clean suggestions? I really wanted to shoot it, but not invest time or money in hand loading.:scrutiny::)

What makes you think it's black powder?

Oh, and a picture always helps.

You have an H & R Hammerless, First Model, Large Frame, Top Break revolver and by your serial number it is a black Powder number. Serial numbers range for this model is estimated to be 01 to 45000.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions. I think AethelstanAegen also gave me an option on BP shooting.
