Hi everyone im new to the site and it looks very informative so i figured i'd give it a try. I just purchased a pretty darn good looking nickel plated Top Break H&R hammerless revolver chambered in 38 S&W. I would like to know if they put serial or model numbers on these revolvers cause i can't seem to find any anywhere. I did find pat dates on top of barrel but had to use a magnifying glass to see those. It reads as follows.....Pat. Oct 4, 87, May 14 and Aug 6, 89, April 2, 95, April 7, 1896. Any help would be appreciated.

There isn't a lot of information available about these revolvers because no one has bothered to do the necessary research. I think you will find the serial number stamped on the frame, under the grips. The style of cylinder notches show that it was made before 1907 when they improved the design, and 1896 when the last patent date was stamped on the barrel. It is sometimes known as the Hammerless "Old Model; Large Frame Auto Ejector."

During the late 19th Century and early 20th they were very popular, and remained in production until about 1940. They are not uncommon, as they outsold Smith & Wesson and Colt by far.

Sorry, but that's the best I can do.
