It may be common but I've never seen one, just curious as to what it is. And it's not the best picture I have, it's the only one I have.

I don't think it's a woodsman, rather some clone. But I do think huntershooter is right that the barrel is missing.
 
That's a Sterling Arms PPL in .380 that is missing the front sight. It's not cut down--these pistols came from the factory like that (except with a front sight.) A real oddball.

Interesting that the OP photo almost looks like it says "DIPLOMAT" in place of "MODEL PPL".

Aha.. Yup, I can even see the "HAWES" now that you point it out. Thanks.

Here I thought it was some "secret squirrel" gun waiting to be whispered about in the dark corners of gun shows.
It's definitely not something you see every day (for better or worse.)
 
Thinking about the OP photo

Seeing as it seems to be missing the front sight - I get to wondering about it and looking for pics. Doesn't seem to be too big an issue. Of course with the no-inch barrel, I guess a guy could just lodge a wad of bubble gum up there...
