So I recently acquired this rifle from a family member, and after looking at every possible picture of WW1 rifles, The closest I'm finding is the M1870 Italian Vetteri. But not really the same. Best way I can check the bore is with a set of calipers at .430. It have very little markings on it but is dated 1885. The stock has a very faint circle about 1.5" in diameter with a large W and 1885. Bore has minor pitting, bolt action is smooth. Not sure if I'm interested in firing it or not, but it would be nice to have basic history. I appreciate any assistance! IMG_1591.JPG IMG_1592.JPG IMG_1593.JPG IMG_1594.JPG

I have one marked 1875. The magazine is where the Vetteri comes in. The Dutch took the Beaumont which I think was first made around 1870 and added the magazine from the Italian Vetteri. I ordered 40 rounds of ammunition from a custom loader in Wisconsin with the intent of reloading the brass after I had shot the original bunch but I have only fired about 6 rounds so far. Too much other stuff going on......

The bolt handle is large because it is split and hollow. The spring which drives the firing pin into the primer is contained within. I had to soak my bolt handle in various penetrating concoctions for about two weeks before I could remove the screw that holds it all together without fear of damage. Other than the excessive weight of the beast it is fun to shoot as you certainly don't have to worry about recoil.
