I had a gentleman bring me an AR15. It was not your typical AR, or at least the upper wasn't. Need some help identifying the upper and if it is rare. Barrel is approx. 10" with a 6" flash hider pin and welded on the end. Please see photos

Well, it is stamped CMMG and is of the early AR15/M16 pattern with simple rear sight.
Not on the CMMG www today.
I wouldn't call it rare, just another parts gun.

Upper appears to be an A1 style. A2 had a different rear sight. Still a carry handle though.

A3 flat tops are the common upper design now, but 10 years ago, A2 and A1 were still common.

It is not matched to the CMMG lower. Different finishes.

I built one very much like the one you've shown. Started with an old Bushmaster upper with a similar barrel/flash suppressor set-up without any markings on it. I used an Olympic Arms lower and assembled it mainly with Colt parts. The collapsible aluminum stock was also made by Colt. Nifty little carbine and about as close as I will ever get to an actual XM-177E2.

The upper has an A stamped on the left side under the rear sight and a L and M in the forging on the right side. It looks as if someone threw some old used parts together and charged this poor guy $1000 for the rifle. I am not familiar with A1 or A2 uppers and thought I would ask. Thank you to all that responded.

So the upper was made by Martin Marietta under contract to LAR Manufacturing- these uppers were GI replacement original equipment, so its a pretty good upper. Good enuf for Uncle Sugar, anyway.
