Hey guys... I had a similar post a few weeks ago, but I had a little different question for you this time.

I am going to be buying a new stock for my SPS soon (HS Precision or Bell and Carlson) My 700 has a standard contour hunting barrel. A lot of these stock have barrel channels made for the heavier varmint, but can I use those with my sporter barrel? The reason I ask is because eventually I will probably add a heavier barrel and dont want to have to switch stock again.

Thanks for your help.

I figured if anything it would take any pressure points off the barrel...

I wonder how bad it will look.

I have a M700 with a Shilen sporter contour sitting in an HS stock right now. One for heavy barrels.

From the side you can't really tell. From the top, it's pretty obvious.

But you can't say it's not free floated.

Both HS and BC make stocks for sporter contours. The problem is finding one at a reasonable cost on the secondary market. If ordered from them, it's a pretty steep price.

My problem has been exactly that...no used market for the sporter barrelled 700s.

Do you have any pics of your rifle?

You can buy the standard barrel stock now and open up the barrel channel later if you get a heavier barrel.

Yeah...I thought about that, but I dont want to mess the stock up trying to open up the barrel channel

Ha...that does look weird. I am just looking for a better stock and I dont want to close my opportunity of re-barreling with a thicker barrel.

You won't mess up the stock by opening up the barrel channel. Just wrap some sandpaper around a long socket and sand out the inside of the barrel channel. Keep moving up in socket size until you get the size you want. About a 30 minute job unless you have to remove an awful lot of material.

You can find a lightly-used H-S Precision stock off someone's 700 5R for around $150 if you keep looking. A lot of people who get 5Rs end up upgrading the stock and selling the old one.

Here ya go.

Actually, it doesn't look too bad. It is a #5 contour. Slightly larger at the reciever end.

I say go for it, it'll work, and it really doesn't matter what it looks like. As long as it shoots.

DRYHUMOR-

I think it looks great man! What model stock is that, I am going to look into that.

Is the #5 contour the standard factory barrel for the SPS?

Thanks again!

I'm not certain what the sps profile is. You might call Remmy and ask them what it compares to, or check Shilen, Kreiger, McGowan, etc and poke around enough to figure it out. Or call one of them.

The #5 is snug in a standard barrel channel near the receiver. Where the chamber ends and the taper of the barrel begins. The barrel itself is slightly snug in the rest of a channel. That's a comparison in a laminated and a CDL standard stock. It won't quite fit in the CDL stock. I considered relieving the laminated stock to allow it to fit, and may still do that. If I can find that bucket of motivation I lost around here somewheres.

The stock is an HS Precision, varmint channel. I got the rifle (pictured) with an HS sporter stock and moved another barreled action into it.

Thanks for all the help, it looks great.

Is you barrel factory or aftermarket?

Way back in the day I put my sporter barrel Remmy 700 in a Choate "Ultimate Sniper" stock (with the idea of getting a heavy barrel someday). It looked funny (especially with the irons still on) but shot great. I eventually decided the stock was too heavy for hunting purposes and restocked it - doesn't mean it didn't work.
