Rem700 SPS Stock Options

Hey Guys... Quick question for ya

I have a Remington 700 SPS with a standard 24" barrel. i have been looking for replacement stock options to get rid of the mold injected plastic stock.

I have looked at Bell and Carlson and McMillen stocks, but are the majority of those only for the bull brreled models, or will my standard barrel drop in with no problem.

Go to their websites...IIRC, both make sporter stocks. I may get a Weatherby style stock for my .308 R700 SPS SS.

I believe the SPS is a heavy barrel, not bull, but as big as factory gets.

I think the SPS Varmint has the heavier barrels, but I have the plain jane SPS (I love it by the way). I don't ever plan on taking more than 3 successive shots, so the thin barrel is fine for me, but i want to make sure that the thin barrel will fit properly into a stock I buy.

Let me ask this, if I buy a stock that will accommodate a thicker barrel, will is also fit on the thinner barrel?

The first thing I will say it that I did not see a "significant" improvement to my SPS Varmint .223 Rem. It came with the synthetic stock, and I bought the HS Precision stock that is used on the Sendero rifles. Some claim their rifles improved, and I believe them. But mine...not so much. It was already accurate. I suggest Stocky's Stocks as well. They have great prices, and great service. Check out the B&C Adjust. You could look at houge. They sell both the pillar and alum bedded block stocks

Thanks guys... I will look into some of those suggestions. This rifle is going to mainly be for hunting and a little target shooting. I will probably just slowly build onto it and make it a long-lasting project.

i just ordered an hs precision for my 700p, got a good price and good service. the wait time was about 1/4 of what it would've been for a mcmillan.

...I'll need to sell my 700p's original stock in a few weeks... good compromise on weight vs handiness

I think it's hard to go wrong with any of the big three or four companies.

Used BDL and CDL stocks show up on E-bay and the gun auction sites quite often and will work

The laminated stocks from www.boydsgunstocks.com are good stocks for around $100. They are quite heavy and are slick for a hunting rifle since they are not checkered. But great stocks for the money if you can live with the weight and slick stock.

At around $200 the www.bellandcarlson.com stocks are fairly light. I have had nothing but trouble with them, but others are happy. Personally I think they are no better than the stock already on your rifle.

www.hsprecision.com stocks are offered at cabelas http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templ...en/common/search/search-box.jsp.form1&Go.x=13 for around $350. I think they are a great stock. A little heavier than I like, but a good stock.

www.mcmfamily.com are the best, but the most expensive. I have 2 and a 3rd on order. The standard stock is about $440. The Edge stock is about 1/2 to 3/4 lb lighter and run a little over $500. Look for a 3-4 month wait.

www.brownprecision.com is another option. Close to the McMillan in quality, but you will either have to send them the gun and have them fit it. Or spend a lot of time doing the final fitting and finishing. If you can do the work you can get a quality stock for less than the McMillan which is a drop in. I did the work myself on one over 20 years ago. and it is still working great.

It also took 4 months to get the Bell and Carlson stocks I ordered a couple of years ago. They were unsatisfactory and have been sent down the road.

They make stocks to fit both standard barrels and the heavy barrels. Some offer stocks for the very thin Mountain rifle barrels. Just specify which barrel when ordering
