Help me decide between a shotgun or a pistol.

Only 1?? See that's where I always mess up.........

Nah,
Being a southern boy and learning to count using fingers and toes has its advantages.

I mean just having one, means the other fingers and toes are "all by themselves".

So since we southern kids were raised to share, play nice with others and everything...we have to have stuff for the other fingers and toes.

sm wrote a book to respond to a man's opinion. I didn't read but the first few lines.

Like I said (which everybody missed), by all means, if you have room for gun storage, get an 870. Again, like I said, buying bulk shells at wally world makes storing a shotgun a good idea. I did NOT say that a shotgun was totally and completely useless. It is a good property defender in some situations (assuming you have a backpack of shells).

People get all offended when you tell the truth about the many major problems with using a shotgun for home defense. People act like you just insulted their wife. These are just opinions folks, but if there were no truth to them, then I wouldn't see all the offended posts.

A shotgun is horrible, and I mean horrible to maneuver inside a house.

Really??:scrutiny:

Other than zombie fantasies or the fantasy of "racking the slide to scare the heck out of an intruder," a shotgun is almost useless. It's a big oversized "friend impresser" but that's about it. Taking a shotgun on a shooting trip is bulky and boring. People rush to buy shotguns because they are cheaper brand new than most new handguns.

If you have space to store guns, then an 870 is a good gun to store for when handgun ammo is in short supply. Stocking up on cases of shotgun shells is easy. Wal mart has pallets of it.

I didn't read but the first few lines.

Should have read it all. Might have learned a thing or three.

No point posting if the person doesn't plan on reading.

Of course, no point buying a gun for you either if you take the same philsosphy towards practice.

...trolls tend to come in bunches around here.

THR and sister sites have times where trolls and other "problems" tend to come in bunches.
One set of problems are handled, and another type of problem comes up.

These events are often triggered by Politics, Legislative, Tragic Events, and various other things.

Often times I post not just for the original thread or member posting , also for others.

Like in School, someone is afraid to raise their hand in hopes someone will ask the question they want to know the answer to.

I also know THR and sister sites, have members that are Antis, and whatever else, just not responsible firearm owners that support our Mission Statements

They lurk, search, read to find things to use against us.

I like shotguns, for all sorts of uses. Flurries is a lot of fun for instance.

I just feel like slapping trigger and felling troll targets from time to time , to send a message.

Singles are fine, doubles are cool , and flurries are a real hoot!

Bring it on dudes! Me and mine can fell 'em as fast as you can toss 'em

Somebody crank up Alan Jackson's "Good Time".
Jackson set a record for the longest line dance.

I gotta mind picture of "longest line dance" with all sorts of platforms being shot for the sake of Freedom, and felling Tyranny.

Based on what personal experience? If you had bothered to take two minutes and read sm's post, you probably would have learned a lot. Believe it or not, there are more than a few folks on here (sm being one of them) who have years and years of actual, real-world experience with the same shotguns you seem to regard as garbage. I'm pretty sure that most, if not all of them will happily provide factual evidence that you're full of hot air in regards to pretty much every statement you've made so far.

A shotgun is horrible, and I mean horrible to maneuver inside a house.

Really? I'd bet that most of us on this site, who keep a shotgun for HD, have already practiced manuvering in their homes with said shotgun. Unloaded of course.

I know I have.

"These are just opinions folks, but if there were no truth to them, then I wouldn't see all the offended posts."

Huh? Not only are your opinions wrong, but so is your logic. Stick around, you might learn something if you read the posts - the entire posts.

e7grt5,

No firearm is ideal in a closed structure, they all have pros and cons.

Where are you located?

You want to go against someone to prove a suppressed mac mini is best?
Do you?

I need backers, and I will need to borrow some guns.
You want to go against me in a closed setting and I will use a shotgun.
I will even use a youth single shot 20 gauge if you want.
Heck I want to!

Target Presentations:

1. Criminal has wife with a gun at her head.
Another has daughter on the floor and sexually assaulting her.
There is screams and things being heard one should never have to hear.

Oh I have other presentations.

You get your mac mini, and let me do my thing with shotgun , handgun and whatever.

Let us make this more fun.
Who has some 28 gauge round ball slugs, and a 28 ga single shot, O/U, pump and 1100 - for this shin-dig?

Up front - I have never attended a known gun training facility.
I am not LEO, nor have I ever served in the Military.

I am just a dumb old southern boy, over 50 years old.

Right now, I have more negative stuff in my life and...I could use some serious fun.

I will need backing...

You Game?
I sure as heck am!

Have your people call my people and lets shoot guns in the house -shall we?

Contact Staff on TFL or THR , they know how to contact me.
I am dead serious!

TFL and THR are my people, and I do not take kindly to folks upsetting my kind.
Right, wrong, no matter, I have my Convictions.

I received PMs from those I care about, in regard to some posts, that upset them.

I do not like my kind getting upset.

Mossberg 590 :) just got mine and I love it. I also have a HD 500 and I love it also but my 590 makes me an operator when i use it in my tactical underwear. :)

The mossberg is going to be cheaper in parts overall and easier on the budget.

Honestly, that just shows you don't know what you're doing. Seriously, get some training.

gallo,

If you're in your home, something with a stock (a "longarm") should always be what you grab if you need a defensive tool. You already have a 9mm. Either the 870 or the 500 would be a fine choice for home defense. Both have their own little advantages (detailed elsewhere on the board). Some years ago, I got a Mossberg 500 version with ghost ring sights for $335. In my case, I needed to swap out the stock for a shorter version, but that was a simple as trading the factory synthetic for an Outers Cadet from someone on THR.

OK being 51 going on 52 in a few months, also an avid gun lover and shooter,I have 7 shotguns of various types...my wife has 5 of her own,a mix of Saiga's,Mossbergs, and and a couple of Rem 870's all in various gauges.

I wouldnt dream of 'not using' any of these for a HD or SD situation...because 'they work' very well in the knowledgeable and trained hands...experience is everything when it comes to a firearm and said usage.

Enough said by me.

I like my new Rem Sportman 48 .20g 5 shot, but for true M.O.U.N.T. combat the H&K mp5K is the best weapon (full auto version). I have used the regular full stock mp5 but in mount operations the K model wins for me. Yes I have served and no disrespect to sm, but there are better weapon systems for close quarters combat.
I think sm is just observing the first rule as we all should.

A shotgun is horrible, and I mean horrible to maneuver inside a house.

The only real problem with a shotgun for home defense is that they are usually harder to practice with at the range so many people don't practice at all.

Most ranges have rifle and pistol distance shooting, then shotguns for clay or whatever.

You need to have some practice shooting at man sized targets at various distances with your defensive ammo and that is difficult at some shooting ranges.

That's really the only downside to the shotgun. Practice is important so if you DO choose the shotty take the time to find a range that will let you work with it.

sm wrote a book to respond to a man's opinion.
That's probably because it appears there are volumes of knowledge you haven't bothered to look into. But if nothing else you've affirmed to me that the general gun discussion isn't worth me looking into.

I am just a dumb old southern boy over 50 years old.
For those that asked in private, here are replies.
My apologies to those that have read these before.

-Each house, apt, condo, or business setting is going to require one to be brutally honest in assessment, and taking prudent steps to prevent trouble in the first place.
Screw the macho bull chips, if you have no duty to retreat, retreat anyway.
Have shooting lanes and backstops you have actually shot at - to know.

First Responders are going to see and hear what they see and hear.
So will Judges, Attorneys , Investigators, Juries, and those sitting in a courtroom.

One is wise to plan way ahead to Prevent, as the Threat might be stopped , still the Threat continues to cause emotional, financial and all sorts of other problem after being stopped.

Our distinguished member El Tejon refers to this as Problem Two.

-No, I do not have a AR carbine.

-Shotgun I keep handy is a H&R Topper, Youth Single Shot, in 20 gauge.
This gun is bone stock, I have not even added sling swivels to it.
It is 36" Total in length. 22" of this is the fixed modified choked plain barrel.
It came with a factory recoil pad.

-I like the Winchester 94 lever action carbine in 30-30, the ones I use, tend to shoot 170 grain loads best.
So for me, this is another long gun in my tool box of long guns.

-Based on my life experiences, observations and other things I will not post publicly, my concern has always been exiting , entering and answering the door of structures.

Meaning I cannot go around with a long gun slung in my ADLs ( activities of daily living)

I have to leave structures, drive, enter, exit, make to and from my vehicle...
I am also in NPEs ( non permissive environments ) which means I cannot take a CCW into these areas, and some I cannot take a pocket knife, nail clippers, or anything.

-Since I have been in a courtroom, and in various roles from being Foreman of a Jury, witness, assisted in investigations and other things...

That kids shotgun is a kids shotgun.
That lever action is what folks in the South use to hunt deer, hawgs and other game.

That kid shotgun is easy to travel in a vehicle when I have to travel.
And it is more friendly to more jurisdictions that do not like firearms!

Awerbuck travels with a double barrel shotgun.
I travel with a kids shotgun.

Clint Smith keeps a 20 ga single shot near his bed.
I keep a kids shotgun near mine.

I have never met Awerbuck or Clint Smith, still I respect them immensely!

I will not be at your gunfight - Awerbuck
.
One needs to know how to run the gun they have. - Clint Smith

Shirley, the very fact that you admit that training is required in order to merely maneuver a bulky shotgun inside the house proves my point.

By the way, if an intruder surprises you, it is VERY easy to grab that bulky, low capacity shotgun and either immediately take it out of your hands or hit you and then take it.

Once again, is this from personal experience, or merely an opinion? It seems you have a lot to say, but little to back it up with. If what you say about an intruder being able to easily disarm you if you're armed with a shotgun is true, it shouldn't be hard for you to post sources where that's happened, right?
