Searched a bit .. thinking this is a gewer 98 but don’t know what to make of the other shield marks.. I know there’s knowledgeable folks here to enlighten me. thanks in advance.
Picked this up from a family member who said it’s blowing the primers/ probably out of head space (30-06) but also could be a bad chamber if it was converted from a different caliber?

proof marks, inspectors codes, looking to see if I can find a digital copy of the :blue Book" as they had pretty much all the codes

It's lacking the Nazi era acceptance mark, so should be prior to 1934. I suspect the Weimar Republic era, but could be earlier.
The Scope base may be covering Manufacturer code / Markings.
But it is a gewer 98
For a brief understanding of the proof/ acceptance code go here... (won't tell you much but more than you know now)

My guess off the top of my head would be that the receiver was probably made during the German Empire era, about a 20-year span. I don't think I could say more without some additional markings to help.

Rebarreled Mausers could be chambered for a very wide variety of cartridges -- I would do a chamber casting to make sure of what you've got.

Barrel contour is not military Mauser. If .30-06 I assume it was sporterized in the USA so German proof marks don't mean anything.

My gunsmith says that in the 1950s, threaded barrels were chambered long so all he needed was a lathe and a headspace gauge or even just a round or fresh case. I suspect this one might have just been screwed in as is.
(Replacement barrels now are usually chambered short so you have to have a library of reamers to finish them for various cartridges.)

Good info and also a good point about the scope base. I’ll remove it to check underneath
