Help moving a safe

I also do the UHaul dolly rental thing. Helps some but moving a safe of any real size is always not fun.

When I got mine I found it fairly easy to slide it across the carpet (as easy
as 580lbs is to slide). You just have to check for any gagged edges that
could cut or shred the carpet.

By tuck do you mean pickup?
I leaned mine against the tailgate and picked up the end. If there are
2 of you it should be easy. Put an old blanket down not to scratch up
the truck bed or the safe.

If you have a 4 wheel flat dolly, those are great... just need someone to
steady it.

The dealer I bought my safe from has several of the heavy duty appliance dollies with the extra kick out wheels. He has these available for free to his customers. My safe weighs 1200 pounds and 3 of us moved it out of my old house, onto a trailer and into my new house without any problems. Not a single scratch on the safe either.

Try to rent a lift called UltraLift or find a company that uses one to do the job.

+1

I rented one of these to move a safe once. It made going up stairs very easy.

I have kept up with this thread from the day it was posted and put all the advice applicable to me in action yesterday when I bought and setup a 550 lbs safe. My father and uncle were drafted into service to help. We used a pickup truck to transport it from the store but could not slide it out by hand. It was 4 inches from where the truck bed ends and the cab begins, so we could not get behind it. We solved this by attaching a rope to the safe (still in card board shipping box) and dragging it out a few feet with a heavy duty ATV. Once that was done, it was a breeze to slide it out by hand and guide it safely to the ground.

My $ 25.00 dolly was not up to the task of moving it, so I rented an appliance dolly. I had never heard of these special dollies before reading this thread. I also took another posters advice and did a dry run with just the appliance dolly. I measured everything before hand, but the dry run showed that an interior door had to be taken off to ensure a damage-less entry. We took our time and everything turned out fine. Thanks for all the tips.

Looks like I'll need to rent either an appliance dolly or a flat one with 4 wheels. I hadn't thought of using plywood to protect the floor. I'll have to take a look at taking the door off--my dolly has a 3rd wheel that will tip the safe back, so maybe I can slide it off.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.
