CZ75b-SA

Single action trigger makes it so much better. No extra draw, just a crisp trigger. Mine has been 100% though 800 rounds in the past few months since I bought it new. My first pistol, and definitely my favorite. Only thing I did was put some slim rubber grips on it. And bought extra mags. A joy to shoot.

BHP, Had an feg p9r, bhp styled, but with a decocker, loved the looks, and the feel, hated the decocker and it's picky eating habits. But again someday, I will have to get another High Power.

Other than that I can only really suggest things I haven't had. Sig p6's are cheap now, want to pick one up myself.
EAA witness, great price on these new.
Baby Eagle, held one and it fits great in the hand.
Zastava m88. Single stack, makes it fun.

And you said 9mm, you could take into account 9x18 makarov. Some cheap guns floating around. My friend bought a pa-63, nice little gun, has an alloy frame, in a small gun, so it has a bit of kick to it, but even still it's a fun gun to shoot. But pa-63 can be had for less than $150, and cz-82's can be had for $200. I would say it's a good deal, and if you aren't reloading, steel cased ammo is cheap.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I will be choosing between the CZ-75 and Sig 226 or 229. It will be a while before I actually buy, I'm in no hurry. I will let you know which way I went though, thanks again. My prefered budget is under $1,000, and I have no problem with buying a good used condition gun.

Smoke @ #28:

Nope! Whenever someone says "9mm full size non-polymer" I always think Hi-Power. Comfy, classy, classic.

Look for an older stamped slide 226; the milled slide guns just don't quite have the balance of the originals.

They're not *bad* guns (I own one of the pre-cheapout milled slide 226 Navys with actual phosphated parts and magazines), but the earlier ones are certainly nicer IME.

Go with the Mecgar mags for spares; they're the same as Sig OEM just cheaper.

CPO/police tradeins are readily available at reasonable prices.

And for the record, I love the Hi-Power as a matter of gunmaking art - but the trigger design even smoothed out or with the mag safety removed is still clunkier than sin. :(

Add another vote for the CZ-75, it's one of, if not THE, best shooting pistols I've experienced, It's replaced the Taurus PT99-AF and a Tanfoglio Witness in my collection, and I've shot a lot of pistols

that solid steel frame just soaks up recoil, the low bore axis keeps muzzle flip to a minimum, and follow up shots are dead easy

I've only had it for a few days (bought it used), I've put 215 rounds through it with flawless reliability, so far, it's been as reliable as my Glock 21, and just as much fun to boot, more fun in fact, due to the cheaper 9mm ammo, I don't have to feel guilty or feel that stabbing, burning pain in my wallet every time I touch off a round...

BHP
CZ
P226
Any of them will be a winner.
Choose the one which suits you better.

I have owned and shot the CZ 75 (not B), the Sig P228, the Glock 17,19 (first Gen), the Star firestar (very accurate).
I now own a CZ 75B SS, and an HK P7 in 9mm and an EAA Elite Match which is in 10mm.
I did not really like the P228 and the Glocks. I did like how accurate the Star Firestar was but it is now not available. I really liked the CZ 75.
For less than a $1000 you can get both the EAA Elite Match in 9mm and the CZ 75 B in whatever action or finish you want (Stainless,TT, etc.).
