Sounds like you have a well thought out plan and two very solid CCW/defensive guns as a start. I would recommend getting a little better AR than a DPMS, at least if you're considering the Sporticle as a friend has one that is a jam-o-matic. I'd also recommend like several other folks have suggested stepping up to a Ruger Single Six or Single Ten over the Rough Rider.

Buying quality guns rewards you not only with a nicer gun, but over the longhaul they tend to maintain or increase their value, low end guns generally won't, as denoted by the gent who purchased a used Rough Rider for $99.

I've heard enough questionable things about Remington quality lately that I'd steer clear of at least the Express shotgun line, as the one my brother had kept having the trigger group retaining pins walk out of rhe reciever. I've been well impressed with several Mossbergs I've examined recently and would chose one over a Remington. A Browning BPS or Benelli Nova may be worth looking at as well.

As far as the GP100 for your next gun, an outstanding pick! I prefer the 5" (limited production run, still may be available) or 6" to the 4", but all are excellent weapons.

Take your time and chose well, good weapons will likely last several lifetimes...

I second the mossberg... lightweight and versatile with a factory 8rd tube, alternate length and style barrels are inexpensive compared to some other shotguns, and there is a wealth of aftermarket "potential" for the gun. You can put nice looking wood or tactical polymer on it and pretty much make it whatever you want. (shameless plug: I've got one listed in the trading post)

That said, I am only selling my mossberg because I just got a Saiga 12  With a few modifications it seems like my Saiga 12 will be a very versatile shotgun.

For a shotgun, a Rem 870 or Mossberg 500 are hard to beat. And....
You need a rifle bigger than .223. The new Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle is a fantastic rifle. Any number of decent bolt rifles would fit the bill. Get a bolt gun in .308 or 30-06. Either one of these will do anything you want, ammo is readily available, and neither is heavy recoiling. Put a quality scope on it, buy a stink load of ammo and then: practice, practice, practice!

Skip the Rough Rider and buy A ruger. Your grandchildren will thank you.

Skip the Rough Rider and buy A ruger. YOU will thank you in a couple of years. ;)
i have had one for several years but before long it started to get loose and eventually just basically came apart. it was a very fun gun up untill that point though. nice and accurate and a joy to shoot, but for the longevity aspect, i would go with the ruger hands down.

the suggestions for a 4" gp100 are spot on. if you ever start to reload you will be able to shoot .38s for about the cost of a .22 mag and for an all-around piece, i dont think there is anything better than a 4" gp100. excellent for defense, a blast at the range, more than sufficient for hunting in most places, and a perfect choice for just bummin around in the woods or camping.

i would also suggest you look at a good lever gun. a 30-30 would be a good choice, or perhaps one chambered in .357 to match your pistol so you would have a common caliber. my preference for a lever action would be a marlin with winchester being a fairly close second.

My taste's run a little differant then some. Go with quality even if you have to wait a few month more for it. But if I was just starting out?

A quality AR type rifle, I had good luck with an Egeal Arms one I bought and a RockRiver. Get some of the goodies that go with them also.

22cal rifle? Hard to beat the 1022. I would get one of standard ones and then later one of the hammer forged bbl target mondels.

22cal pistol? I have a single Six and its OK. If your more into Cowboy guns it will aple to you more. But I realy like the Ruger MKII that I have. Bull Barrel and adjustable sights. If I wanted somting for a camp gun I would concider a standard or one of the 45/22 they make. On the other hand an old Smith & Wesson Kit Gun would be real nice to.

Shotgun? Remington 870. I bought an old Police turn in years ago and it has served me well. It came with a 18" plane barrel. I picked up a 20" slug bore barrel for it and a 28" vent rib barrel. So it will do most anything I ask it to (except take a magnum round). I have used it to shoot clay, Phesants and some other small game.

If you were to add a defencive handgun to the list you would have a bare bones arsenal. Later you could add more as your tastes change or you find other things you liked.

Colt Goverment model
Colt Combat Commander
N frame Smiths
K frame Smiths
M1
M1A
Fn Fal
AKs

And the list could just go on for ever.

Best of luck and enjoy the ride
WB
