My friend just traded some stuff and recieved a pistol. It is a 629-1 stainless 6" barrel 44mag with factory wood grips. The gun is about 15 years old, but has only had a box of rounds through it if that. It is VERY clean. Also, it has had a trigger and action job done. It truly is the best trigger I have ever pulled. The gun did receive a few scratches right above the right grip on the frame from the trigger job. Other than that the gun is flawless.

My friend and I both want to know the value of the gun. He wants to sell it. I need to get it out of my house soon because if it doesn't go, I know it will find a way to stay.

I bought a 629-2 in 4" for $450 last sunday. it is in 98% plus condition with the europian proof marks on it.
At a show this weekend they were running fron like $625 to around $800.
I know thats a wide margine but its the last I saw.

I think to me it depends on what you want or how it is going to be sold.
I was not really looking for one but I believed the $450 price was something I was not going to pass on. Now I did pass on the others I saw.

Made Oct 14 1983 or 85. Condition 90% (with scratch) The scratch might buff out. :)

It is a $500+ plus revolver, selling for any less would be simply STUPID....wholesale on the model 15 yrs ago was less than $400... just go look at an auction site...some are price way too high but others ....AS for the trigger job...don't get too excited. AND IF DONE WRONG.....

When ever I bought a 629 the first, the very first thing I do is to go thru it and restore it to original factory spec's with factory parts....

If I found 626's for $450 I'd break my arm getting into my pocket for the cash...that's better than finding $450 in cash on the sidewalk.

Condition 90% (with scratch)

No, probably 99% with the scratch. This is a confusing point to many people. The "percent" refers to the percent of original finish remaining. Hard to degrade ss finishes. I doubt any scratch covers more than 1% of the gun's total surface area...

$500 to $550 is probably the market price right now. I'd do one test for sure though, check for step-off on the hammer in SA mode. The fact someone doing a trigger job managed to leave marks makes me wonder what all they did and how well they did it. If it does step-off (see Jim March's sticky if you are unfamiliar with this), figure $100 to replace the hammer and trigger.

I am WAY in Mike Sr.'s camp on this. Make sure at least the hammer and trigger are safe.

As to "percent" of finish here's a picture of a gun rated 85% by one of the nation's top firearms experts (Jim Supica, current head of the NRA's firearms museum)"

Thanks for the clarification and words of wisdom guys. I too was on the fence about gunsmith work done by someone who would put scratches on the frame. I'll be sure to get it checked out or at least verify that the internals are safe. I don't think its going to go away anytime soon. My dad saw it and flung a craving...

629 S&W 44 Mag

Dang I bought a S&W 29-3 in Mint condition it has a 6" Barrel and I've been looking for a 629 with a 5" Barrel for at least a year now with no luck. What show was that at. If they were there before theres a good chance they'll be there again If anyone knows where a good show to find a 629 Classic with a 5" Barrel Please let me know as the trip would be worth it. I'm in Tampa S/N [email protected]. I'd even bring the blue 29-2 w/6" bbl for trade let me know if the shows are in central FL. as Miami or Jacksonville are a little far from Tampa or call me at 813 405 7413.:banghead::banghead::banghead:

I just bought a 629-1 in near mint condition with original box and papers for $600. And I'm in Califorina where everything is overpriced (and overtaxed)!
